Las Vegas – For the first time since 2011-12, Terran Petteway came off the bench, as NBA Summer League continued Monday.

Petteway, who started all 63 games at Nebraska during his two-year Husker career, came off the bench in Atlanta’s 84-74 loss to the D-League Select Team. The 6-foot-6 guard/forward last came off the bench during his freshman season at Texas Tech.

Petteway provided a spark for the Hawks in a losing effort, finishing with eight points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists.

During NBA Summer League, Petteway is averaging 9.3 points per game, along with 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Petteway and the Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, as the Hawks (1-2) will begin tournament play.

GERING, Neb. (AP) — A Minatare man accused of violently sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl has been found competent to stand trial.

29-year-old Jacob Summerville will stand trial in November on first-degree sexual assault of a child and intentional child abuse resulting in serious injury.

The girl was taken to a Scottsbluff hospital in March with bruises, a bite mark on her leg and significant internal injuries, and doctors determined she had been sexually assaulted.

Police arrested Summerville, who had been babysitting the girl when she was hurt. Police say Summerville told officers he had only spanked the girl.

An attorney for Summerville, Sarah Newell with the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, did not immediately return a phone message left Tuesday seeking comment.

Rough play is riskier than heading in youth soccer: Study

youth soccerCHICAGO (AP) — Heading takes the heat in youth soccer, but a study says limiting rough play might be a better way to prevent concussions and other injuries.

The nine-year look at U.S. high school games found that over 1 in 4 concussions occurred when players used their head to hit the ball. But more than half of these heading-related concussions were caused by collisions with another player rather than with the ball. These included head-to-head, elbow-to-head and shoulder-to-head contact.

Dawn Comstock is a University of Colorado public health researcher who led the study. She says soccer rules prohibit most player-to-player contact and notes that rough play has become more common at all levels of the game.

The study was published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Demaryius Thomas received some good news Monday and it had nothing to do with his contract stalemate with the Denver Broncos: his mother is getting out of prison early.

President Barack Obama cut the prison sentences of 46 non-violent drug offenders, and one of them was Katina Smith, who has been incarcerated in Georgia since 2000.

She and her mother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, were arrested on drug trafficking charges in 1999 when Thomas was 11 years old.

Smith was scheduled to be released in 2017. Now, she’ll be released on Nov. 10.

Smith had declined to testify against her mother in exchange for a reduced sentence. Her mother received a life sentence as a multiple offender.

Jeffers, 2nd Street Intersection to Be Closed Wednesday

road-workOfficials with the Nebraska Department of Roads say road work will force the closure of a North Platte intersection on Wednesday.

Weather permitting, the intersection of Jeffers and 2nd Streets will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic, as well as pedestrian traffic on July 15.

NDOR says the intersection of Jeffers and 3rd Streets will be open to accommodate both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Motorists are urged to use caution in and around the work area, and are reminded to always buckle-up, every trip.

21-Year-Old Omaha Woman Dies in Early Morning Crash

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 21-year-old woman has died in a single-vehicle, early morning crash in Omaha.

Police say Terrianna Cole of Omaha died at the scene after she was thrown from her car around 1:30 a.m. Monday. The vehicle struck a wooden pole, chain-link fence and a tree before spinning through a yard near North 90th and Sprague streets.

Police say they’re investigating speed and alcohol as contributing factors in the crash.

Police say they had to shut down the area for a few hours, but roads were reopened just before 5 a.m.

Study: Silent Cancer for Moms a Rare Result in Prenatal Tests

pregnant-womanCHICAGO (AP) — For pregnant women, abnormal results from certain prenatal tests may signal something is wrong with the moms-to-be, not the fetus.

That’s according to a preliminary study that says very rarely, these results may indicate cancer when follow-up testing indicates a healthy fetus.

Prenatal blood tests are increasingly being used to detect fetal chromosome abnormalities, including Down syndrome. They test pregnant women’s blood, which contain small amounts of fetal DNA. But cancer is among conditions that can cause results that mistakenly indicate an abnormality in the fetus. The results echo smaller studies but they’re not definitive.

The researchers say more studies are needed to help doctors decide how to advise women about these tests.

The study was published online Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
