Recent NFL defensive standouts Demorrio Williams and Josh Bullocks highlight a five-player group of 2015 inductees into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, which were announced on Thursday, July 9.

Joining Williams and Bullocks, who were Blackshirts together at Nebraska in 2002 and 2003, are 1997 national championship quarterback Scott Frost (1990s), All-Big Eight safety Jeff Krecji (1980s) and All-Big Eight halfback Harry Wilson (1960-70s).

In addition, quarterback Brook Berringer, who was a key player on Nebraska’s 1994 and 1995 national championship teams, will receive an honorary posthumous induction into the Hall of Fame. The announcement of Berringer’s induction comes on what would have been his 42nd birthday.

Buffett’s Firm’s RV Make Pays $5M for Mishandling Recalls

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Berkshire Hathaway’s RV maker, Forest River, has agreed to pay at least $5 million and reform its practices because regulators say it mishandled two recalls.

The company based in Elkhart, Indiana, will pay up to $30 million in additional fines if regulators find any additional violations in the next three years. The federal Transportation Department announced the agreement with Forest River on Thursday.

Forest River officials did not immediately respond to a phone message Thursday afternoon.

Regulators say Forest River was slow to report some required data and failed to swiftly launch two safety recalls after problems were found in nearly 1,000 of its camper trailers.

Forest River also agreed to hire an independent expert to audit its safety practices.

Forest River is owned by Warren Buffett’s Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate.

Omaha Couple Doesn’t Want to Lose Home to School District

schoolOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha retired couple is resisting efforts by the school district to buy their home and the home they own next door.

The district wants Pam and Ernie Jackson’s land and 10 other properties as part of its plans for a new high school.

The Jacksons have lived in their home for 20 years. They have retained an attorney and posted “OPS, Hands Off Our Home” signs in their front lawn. They want the district to conduct a feasibility or traffic study to determine if buying their land is necessary.

District officials met with nearby homeowners last month to discuss the project, land negotiations and the possibility of eminent domain. The 10 other properties are a mix of residential and commercial sites.

Not Berry Good: US Adults Still Skimp on Fruits and Veggies

fruits-and-veggiesNEW YORK (AP) — Most U.S. adults still aren’t eating nearly enough fruits and vegetables.

In a large national survey, only 13 percent said they ate the recommended amount of fruit each day. And only 9 percent had enough vegetables.

Californians — a big produce-growing state — ate the most fruits and vegetables. Tennessee was at the bottom of the fruit list, and Mississippi was last in eating vegetables.

The findings come from a 2013 national telephone survey of hundreds of thousands of Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the study Thursday.

Facebook Makes it Easier to Tweak What You See in Your News Feed

facebook-logoNEW YORK (AP) — Facebook wants you to see more of what you want to see.

New tools will help you weed through the clutter of boring, unwanted information, often from long-forgotten acquaintances.

You’ll now be able to select the friends and pages you want to see on your news feed first each time you log on. To do this, go to the friend’s profile. Click on the box that says “following” and select “see first.”

Facebook’s computer software uses a wide range of information you give them to decide what to show. This includes what friends you interact with, or whether you tend to like photos, videos or text updates more.

The world’s largest online social network announced the new tools Thursday.

Opinion: Judges Can’t Refuse to Perform Same-Sex Marriages

judgeshipOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An opinion released by a state judicial ethics committee says Nebraska judges and court officials cannot refuse to perform same-sex marriages unless they refuse to perform all marriages.

The opinion released last week by the Nebraska Judicial Ethics Committee answers the question of whether a judge or clerk magistrate can refuse to perform marriages for same-sex couples based on the official’s religious belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman. The committee also was asked if officials can refuse if they refer the same-sex couple to another judge willing to perform the ceremony.

The committee determined that the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last month legalizing same-sex marriage does not allow Nebraska judges to refuse to perform gay marriage ceremonies if they also perform opposite-sex marriages.

Vet Finds 62 Hairbands, 8 Pairs of Underwear Inside Dog

odd-newsMARS, Pa. (AP) — This hungry Labrador has some unusual taste buds.

A Pennsylvania veterinarian retrieved 62 hair bands, eight pairs of underwear and a bandage from the dog’s stomach during exploratory surgery.

The head technician at Good Shepherd’s Veterinary Hospital said the black Lab named Tiki wasn’t responding to medicine for vomiting, diarrhea and a loss of appetite, and X-rays showed a mass in its stomach.

Last week’s surgery lasted two hours, and the vet and his technician were shocked at the items that were pulled out.

The dog’s owner, Sara Weiss, says Tiki once swallowed a plastic foam dart, but that passed through the dog’s system naturally.

Patrol: Arkansas Man Died After Northeast Nebraska Collision

state-patrol-logoEMERSON, Neb. (AP) — A 52-year-old Arkansas man has died after his pickup collided with a trailer in northeast Nebraska.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Nebraska Highway 35 near Emerson. State Trooper Brian Malone says Todd Benjamin, of Lonoke, Arkansas, was driving the pickup west when it ran into the trailer, which was being pulled by an eastbound sport utility vehicle. Malone says Benjamin’s pickup rolled after it struck the trailer.

Three people in his truck were taken to a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Malone says the two people in the SUV weren’t injured.

The accident is being investigated.
