Suicide Attempts Most Common in Newer Soldiers, Study Finds

soldierCHICAGO (AP) — A big Army study says war-time suicide attempts are most common in newer enlisted soldiers who have not been deployed.

Officers are less likely to try to end their lives. And at both levels, attempts are more common among women and those without a high school diploma.

The study analyzed records on nearly 10,000 suicide attempts among almost 1 million active-duty Army members during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, from 2004 to 2009. Rates increased during that time.

Military suicides have gotten the most attention, but attempts are more prevalent and sometimes have different contributing factors.

The study was published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Royals beat Rays 7-1 to finish off doubleheader sweep

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alcides Escobar hit a bases-loaded double, Alex Gordon matched a career high with four RBIs and the Kansas City Royals cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday and a sweep of their day-night doubleheader.

Escobar fell behind 0-2 against Brandon Gomes (1-4) in the sixth inning before battling back to a full count. On the 11th pitch of the at-bat, Escobar yanked a fair ball just down the third-base line, emptying the bases and breaking a 1-all deadlock.

Brandon Finnegan (2-0), Luke Hochevar and Ryan Madson made the lead stand in relief of Royals starter Edinson Volquez, who allowed only John Jaso’s homer in five innings.

The victory in Game 2 came after Paulo Orlando hit a ninth-inning grand slam to give Kansas City a 9-5 win in the opener.

Pujols, Trout homers lead Angels past Rockies, 10-2

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — All-Stars Albert Pujols and Mike Trout hit two of Los Angeles’ four home runs and the Angels routed the Colorado Rockies 10-2 on Tuesday night.

Matt Joyce and Chris Iannetta also went deep as the Angels jumped on Colorado starter Chad Bettis for 10 runs in just 2 1-3 innings to win their fourth straight.

Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney (2-0) had another impressive outing in just his third career start. He allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out five in 7 1-3 innings. He surrendered a solo home run to Drew Stubbs in the third and an RBI single to Troy Tulowitzki in the sixth that extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Heaney’s outing was more than enough for the offense. Pujols hit a three-run shot in the first inning for his AL-leading 26th homer of the season. Joyce gave Los Angeles a 5-0 lead with his fourth of the year in the second, and Trout hit his 22nd later in the inning to make it 8-0.

Nebraska to Accept Amended Tax Returns from Same-Sex Couples

gaymarriageLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials say they will accept amended income tax returns from same-sex married couples following last month’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Acting Tax Commissioner Leonard J. Sloup says Tuesday the state Department of Revenue will accept amended income tax returns for all open tax years. In most cases, that means couples can file returns going back as many as three years.

Same-sex couples married in other states are also eligible to refile income tax returns.

Sloup says couples are not required to amend any returns.

The U.S. Supreme Court in June legalized same-sex marriage across the nation.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 35-year-old Grand Island man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting a co-worker outside a meatpacking plant in south-central Nebraska last year.

Angelo Bol was sentenced Tuesday morning. Bol had pleaded no contest to first-degree murder in May.

Prosecutors say Bol waited several hours and targeted 34-year-old Karel Perez-Almaguer when he shot him several times on Dec. 15 in the parking lot of Gibbon Packing in Gibbon.

Bol told the judge that he had been taunted and discriminated against at work, and Perez-Almaguer had harassed him.

Bol was fired on the day of the shooting a fight the previous day that involved Perez-Almaguer.
