sarpy-co.-sheriffSPRINGFIELD, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a neighbor found the body of a man who was run over by a tractor in eastern Nebraska.

Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis says the body of 72-year-old Jerry Norris was found around 7 p.m. Sunday in a field about three miles west of Springfield. Norris’ family had reported him missing because he hadn’t been seen for several hours after he left home to do some mowing.

The accident is being investigated.

Omaha Boy Scouts Say Man Didn’t Pay for $28,000 in Popcorn

boy-scoutsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Boy Scouts of America’s Omaha-based Mid-America Council has sued a Scout leader over a $28,000 popcorn order the organization says he did not pay for.

The lawsuit filed in Douglas County District Court alleges Ernest Citta III of Omaha received a delivery of $28,125 worth of popcorn products. The lawsuit says months passed without payment.

On April 17, six months after the delivery, the council sent a letter to Citta demanding payment. The council said Citta indicated the customer who ordered the popcorn canceled their order, but that he declined to say who the customer was.

The council has asked a judge to declare that Citta owes the money by default.

No attorney for Citta was listed in online court records. Attempts by The Associated Press to reach him were not successful.

Officials Hope to Extract Vehicle of Missing NP Teens Tuesday

Authorities have resumed attempts to remove a vehicle belonging to two North Platte teens, who have been missing since mid-May, from the South Platte River.

According to Chief Deputy Roland Kramer of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), law enforcement, volunteers and crews from Western Engineering have been at the site of the accident on South River Road since early this morning.

Officials announced last week that flows on the South Platte River had decreased and were expected to decrease more by the beginning of this week.

At this point, it looks like the flows have held true to projections, and authorities can now resume efforts to recover the vehicle.

Initially, Kramer said they were hopeful that the equipment could be put in place today, and they could begin the process of extracting the vehicle.

However, Kramer said the goal now is to get the equipment in place today and begin the extraction process first thing tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

Kramer said the safety of the heavy equipment operators and of everyone involved is always the most important thing to consider, and it takes time to get everything into place.

According to Kramer, the goal is to get the equipment about halfway out to the location of the vehicle.  He also said there is an island near the vehicle’s location, and they would like to get some equipment onto the island as well.

Volunteer divers first located the vehicle about a week after the teens’ vehicle drove into the swollen river on the night of May 18.

Due to the high waters and swift currents of the river, authorities were forced to wait until the water subsided.

Kramer said he is hopeful they can bring closure to the families of Lexie Wiezorek and Noah Ramos soon.

NPCC Knights Basketball Sign Three

The North Platte Community College Knights recently announced the signing of three players for the upcoming 2015–2016 basketball season. They are: Myles Laurent-Smart from Orlando, Fla., Mike Amius from Lantana, Fla. and Leito Holloway from Mint Hill, N.C.

Laurent–Smart, originally from England, played for West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla.  Laurent–Smart is a 5’ 10” point guard.

West Oaks Head Coach Shaun Wiseman said, “Laurent–Smart is a good role player on a good team. He is a great defensive point guard that distributes the ball well and is unselfish.  He plays with a lot of intensity and has very good leaping ability.” West Oaks plays in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association and won the state championship this past season.

Mike Amius, who is 6’ 7”, plays the three or the four position. Knights assistant coach Ryan Glenney said, “Amius is a very athletic finisher that really runs the floor.  Good ball handler for his size.”

Santaluces head coach Reggie Dixon said “Amius is a very hard worker and exciting in the open court.  He is a great student and has good character.  He was a leader on the team.” Amius averaged about 12 points per game and five rebounds this past season.

Leito Holloway played at Rocky River High School in Mint Hill, N. C. Glenney said “Leito is a 6’ 3” strong, lefty guard, who is an excellent finisher.  He is able to make plays above the rim as well as for his teammates.  He should be able to come in and really help us on both ends of the floor.”

On getmerecruited.com Holloway’s profile said, “Holloway is a very under-rated prospect. Very quick and versatile, Holloway understands the “how to” in basketball. He’s a student of the game with all of the trimmings. Leito is a well-rounded player and can shoot the ball efficiently long range. His ability to make moves to the basketball and pull jumpers from 15 feet makes him more of a threat than most prospects, and he can also play above the rim. Holloway has good ball handling skills and can make plays to the basket or set up his teammates to score. Being that he understands the game so well he uses his size to over-power smaller guards and his quickness to get around much bigger players.”

Tornado Suspected in Damage to Nebraska Panhandle Farmstead

severe-weatherMORRILL, Neb. (AP) — A farmstead in the Nebraska Panhandle has been damaged by what may have been a short-lived tornado.

While officers were there, the suspect returned. Police say she kneed an officer and spat in the officer’s face. Once she was in custody, the woman repeatedly banged her head in the back of the police car.

The woman was treated at the Nebraska Medical Center before being taken to jail. She is suspected of assault, destruction of property, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and felony assault on an officer.

Lloyd scores 3 and US defeats Japan 5-2 for World Cup title

womens world cupVANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Carli Lloyd came up big again. Three times.

And with it came the Americans’ elusive third Women’s World Cup title.

Lloyd scored a hat trick as the U.S. burst to a four-goal lead in the first 16 minutes, and the Americans overwhelmed defending champion Japan 5-2 Sunday for their record third championship and first since 1999.

A sellout crowd that included U.S. Vice President Joe Biden roared in approval for Lloyd’s hat trick, the first ever in a Women’s World Cup final.

When it was over, Lloyd collapsed to her knees and pumped her fists. Forward Abby Wambach bear-hugged teary-eyed coach Jill Ellis, lifting her off the ground.

Lloyd also won the Golden Ball as the most outstanding player in the Women’s World Cup.

U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo won the Golden Gloves award as the top goalkeeper in the tournament. The United States defense was stellar throughout and went 540 minutes between the first match of the group stage and Sunday’s final without giving up a goal.

Canada’s Kadeisha Buchanan won the Best Young Player award and Germany’s Celia Sasic won the Golden Boot.
