Authorities Seek Nebraska Man Charged with Sex Assault, Other Crimes

sarpy-co.-sheriffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities are searching for a man charged in an arrest warrant with an attack on his ex-girlfriend last month.

Police are searching for 35-year-old Nicholas Moss. Moss is charged with false imprisonment, sexual assault and violating a protection order.

Court documents say Moss’ ex-girlfriend found her Council Bluffs, Iowa, home broken into and her dog missing. She said Moss soon called her and told her he would kill the dog if she didn’t meet him. Sarpy County Sheriff’s investigators say Moss sexually assaulted her at a Bellevue motel before forcing her into his truck. She was able to escape when he stopped at an intersection.

Moss faces up to 55 years if he’s found and convicted of the charges.

Nebraska Woman Faces Charges in Western Iowa Crash

handcuffsCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Omaha, Nebraska, woman faces charges following a chase and single-vehicle crash in Council Bluffs, Iowa, earlier in the week.

26-year-old Jessica Hauger was arrested late Tuesday after the incident.

Police say Hauger sped away when an officer attempted to pull her over in Council Bluffs. Police say Hauger lost control of the car she was driving as she attempted to take the westbound Interstate 480 ramp and crashed into a utility pole.

Police say the car was reported stolen from Omaha. Hauger was arrested on suspicion of theft, failure to stop for emergency vehicles and other counts.

She remained in the Pottawattamie County Jail on a $5,000 bond and could not be reached Saturday for comment.

2 Killed in Collision in Northeast Nebraska

fatal-crashST. EDWARD, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says two people are dead and a young girl injured following the head-on crash of a car and a pickup on state Highway 39 in Platte County.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. Saturday just southeast of St. Edward.

The crash killed 40-year-old Maggie Turpitt, of Genoa, and 24-year-old Daniel Sanchez, of Cedar Rapids.

The patrol says Sanchez was driving the car and overcorrected after entering a ditch. The car crossed the center line and collided head-on with the pickup driven by Turpitt.

The patrol says a young girl in Turpitt’s vehicle was taken to a hospital. Her condition was unavailable Saturday morning.

Sanchez and Turpitt were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ex-Nebraska Deputy Who Shot Self Last Year Faces Sex, Abuse Charges

FALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — A former Richardson County Sheriff’s deputy who accidentally shot himself last year and then lied about now faces charges of first-degree sexual assault and child abuse.

26-year-old Joshua Nincehelser has been charged with first-degree sexual assault and child abuse. Authorities say he sexually assaulted a girl younger than 12 earlier this year.

In January, Nincehelser was sentenced to three years of probation and 180 days of community service for lying when he said someone he had pulled over shot him on a rural road near Humboldt in June 2014.

He later admitted he had accidentally shot himself, then fired several shots into his cruiser to make his story look real.

Scottsbluff Woman Faces Motor Vehicle Homicide Charge

fatal-accidentSCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old Scottsbluff woman has been charged with misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide in the death of a 68-year-old German man.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Dave Eubanks said he’s citing Magdeline Pourier in the case. Eubanks says careless driving led to the death of Michael Schmidt, of Leipzig, Germany. Schmidt died June 28 after Pourier struck the man, who was walking in the street.

Schmidt, who suffered head trauma in the accident, died at Regional West Medical Center.

3 in Omaha Charged with Cattle Rustling in Nebraska, Iowa

ne-supreme-court-gavelOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Officials in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa are prosecuting three Omaha residents they suspect of cattle rustling.

Ervin John Jacob, James Michael Brunzo and Amy Louise Springer are accused of slipping into feedlots at night and hauling off steers and cows to sell at sale barns and livestock auctions.

The three are charged with cattle thefts in Cass County, Iowa, and Cuming County, Nebraska. The 57-year-old Jacob and 42-year-old Springer also face charges in Nebraska’s York County.

Jacob and Springer have already pleaded guilty in some of the cases but face additional charges. The 49-year-old Brunzo is charged with theft in Cuming County and Iowa’s Cass County.

On May 15 of this year Tim Miles announced the hiring of Rashon Burno as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Nebraska. Just seven weeks later, Burno has resigned at Nebraska and is off to fill a similar role at Arizona State University. Burno had spent the previous three seasons working under Billy Donovan at Florida and was hired to replace Chris Harriman, who took the head coaching job at New Mexico this offseason.

Platte River State Park to host rimfire challenge

Platte-River-State-Park_Entrance-SignLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Platte River State Park is hosting a rimfire shooting challenge and learning experience.

The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. July 11 at the Roger G. Skyes Outdoor Heritage Education Complex.

Organizers say the introduction to rimfire shooting is about shooting fast, but participants will first learn the fundamentals by being slow and methodical while practicing.

Space is limited to the first 20 people to register. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Shooters who bring their own rimfire rifles must also bring their own ammunition.

The event is free, but each vehicle entering the part must have an entry permit.

Cain has 3 hits to lead Royals over Twins 3-2 in 10 innings

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lorenzo Cain had three hits and scored the winning run in the 10th inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 on Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Cain led off the bottom of the 10th with a double, went to third on a wild pitch by Aaron Thompson (1-3) and scored on Jarrod Dyson’s fielder’s choice grounder to first baseman Joe Mauer.

The Twins challenged the call, but after a 99-second review the ruling on the field stood.

Wade Davis (4-1) worked a spotless 10th and lowered his ERA to 0.26.

The Royals tied it 2-2 in the eighth when Kendrys Morales’ two-out single drove home Cain, who had singled and stole second. Morales leads the Royals with 51 RBIs.

 

Pennington’s sac fly in 10th wins it for Diamondbacks, 4-3

colorado-rockiesPHOENIX (AP) — Cliff Pennington’s sacrifice fly to deep left field drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Friday night.

Welington Castillo led off the 10th against Yohan Flande (0-1) with a double off the fence in right field. Castillo moved to third on Chris Owings’ single and scored easily on Pennington’s fly ball.

Pennington had the game-tying hit in the sixth inning and earned the third walkoff win for Arizona this season. Andrew Chafin (5-0) got the win in relief after pitching a scoreless 10th.

The Rockies lost a chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th after getting the first two batters on base. Pinch-hitter Michael McKenry lined out to shortstop Nick Ahmed, who doubled off Wilin Rosario at second. Then Chafin struck out Drew Stubbs to end the inning.
