Friends, Family Help Nebraska 13-Year-Old Pull Off Backyard Musical

musicLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Family, friends and other young children helped a 13-year-old Lincoln boy with a passion for musical theater pull off a production of “Shrek: The Musical” this weekend on a backyard stage.

Last summer, around 70 people attended a play that Dylan Lawrence and several friends put together at his home. Friends of Dylan’s parents attended the show and decided to offer up their backyard to Dylan as a place for him to direct larger productions. That space in Lincoln is now called The Backyard Theatre.

Dylan said he spent around 10 months working on his latest show. Although he had help with building the sets for the musical, the creativity and all major decisions were his.

End of Boy Scouts’ Ban on Gays Prompts Elation and Alarm

boy-scoutsSALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The lifting of the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay adult leaders prompted some gay Eagle Scouts to quickly rejoin the movement on Tuesday. But the Mormon church — the nation’s largest sponsor of Scout units — warned that it may split away to form a global scouting organization of its own.

Mormon officials described the admission of openly gay leaders as “inconsistent with the doctrines of the Church.”

The contrasting reactions followed the BSA national executive board’s 45-12 vote on Monday to lift the nationwide ban while allowing church-sponsored units to continue excluding gay adults.

Across the country, scores of gay Eagle Scouts signed forms with the advocacy group Scouts for Equality, expressing interest in rejoining the Boy Scouts as volunteers.

ben zobristOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have traded utilityman Ben Zobrist and cash to the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Aaron Brooks and minor league left-hander Sean Manaea.

The teams announced the trade Tuesday. The 34-year-old Zobrist, an infielder and outfielder, batted .268 with six home runs, 20 doubles, two triples and 33 RBIs in 67 games for the A’s, who are last in the AL West.

He joins a Royals team that leads the AL Central a season after beating Oakland in the one-game wild card on the way to its first World Series in 29 years and a seven-game loss to San Francisco.

Zobrist missed a month following arthroscopic left knee surgery in late April for a torn meniscus.

A’s general manager Billy Beane pulled off his second trade in 24 hours and third in six days. Oakland dealt closer Tyler Clippard to the New York Mets on Monday night after trading lefty Scott Kazmir to his hometown Houston Astros last Thursday.

USDA Expects to Pay Farmers $191M for Bird Flu Losses

USDADES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The federal government expects to spend $191 million to pay chicken and turkey farmers for birds lost to avian flu.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack says that’s in addition to the nearly $400 million spent on cleaning up dead birds and disinfecting barns. The government also is paying to research and stockpile a bird flu vaccine.

Vilsack spoke Tuesday at a bird flu conference in Des Moines where the poultry industry is talking about how to better respond if the disease returns.

Hardest hit by the outbreak this spring were Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska.

Vilsack says the USDA is preparing for recurrence of the virus spread by wild migrating birds and plans to ask Congress to consider a poultry disaster program similar to one that exists for livestock producers.
