The performances of “She Stoops To Conquer” will take place September 25, 26 and 27 andOctober 2, 3 and 4.  The Goldsmith play has been considered a classic since its first performances in London in 1776.  As a comedy of manners, it pokes fun of the customs and society practices of that day while providing timeless humor with keen insight into the human experience.

Oklahoma Court: Ten Commandments Monument at Capitol Must Go

gavel-and-scaleOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Supreme Court has reaffirmed in a 7-2 decision that a Ten Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds must be removed.

The state’s highest court on Monday denied a rehearing that had been requested by Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt.

Chief Justice John Reif wrote in the court’s concurring opinion that justices carefully considered the Pruitt’s arguments on behalf of the Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission and found nothing to merit a rehearing in the case.

The court had found previously that the monument is a religious symbol and must be removed because it violates the state’s constitutional ban on using public property to benefit a religion.

The decision prompted an outcry from some conservative legislators who vowed to impeach the justices or amend the constitution.

Nebraska Man Gets 4 Years of Probation for Assaulting Father

jailELWOOD, Neb. (AP) — A 27-year-old man has been given four years of probation for assaulting his father in south-central Nebraska.

Garrett Beck pleaded no contest and was convicted of assault. Prosecutors dropped a weapons charge in exchange for Beck’s plea. Records say Beck, of Holdrege, was sentenced last week. He must serve seven days in jail each month for the first 19 months of his probation and serve 30 days at the end of his probation. But the judge also said the jail time could be waived by Beck’s probation officer.

Prosecutors say deputies were sent to the Gosper County home of 55-year-old Gary Beck on Nov. 29, 2014. Deputies say the elder Beck complained that his son used a wooden rod to strike his head.

Lincoln – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced that his office sent a letter to President Barack Obama in support of the Keystone XL pipeline project.

In his letter, the Governor urged the Obama Administration to issue a permit for the pipeline:

“Like many other Nebraskans, I support the revised route and the construction of the pipeline; however, you alone have the power to approve this important infrastructure project that will bring good-paying jobs and much-needed tax revenue to Nebraska counties during construction and for years to come. Consequently, I urge you to issue a Presidential Permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.”

ORD, Neb. (AP) — The Valley Performing Arts Theatre group has purchased the former Ord Theatre with hopes of bringing it back to life and adding to the vibrancy of the community’s downtown area.

Assessor records show that on July 2, the group officially purchased the building from BankFirst for around $125,000. The structure, built in 1928, is now called the Valley Theatre.

The last owners of the building undertook a large renovation around 2012, converting the theater into a more versatile event space and restaurant. It later closed, and group member Bob Stowell says their group leased it for about a year.

Group member Janie Zadina says the theater could be used for plays, musicals and other performances.

Nebraska Driver Who Dragged Motorist Won’t Be Charged

lancaster-county-sheriffLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Prosecutors say hit-and-run charges won’t be filed because there’s no evidence a driver knew his car had hit a motorcyclist and dragged the body of a Lincoln man for more than two miles in January.

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said Monday that the driver didn’t know the bump he noticed was the body of 38-year-old Gabe Wilken, who’d already crashed. County Attorney Joe Kelly says a hit-and-run charge would require prosecutors to show the driver knew he’d hit someone.

Investigators don’t know whether Wilken was alive when he was struck by the driver’s sedan after Wilken crashed just after 7 p.m. on Jan. 16. The car driver told investigators he didn’t come forward because he didn’t know he’d hit Wilken and had heard deputies were looking for a pickup.
