Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team wrapped up its fifth 2015 fall camp practice Tuesday night, as the Huskers practiced outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields for just over two hours. NU was in full pads for the first time in camp, as the Huskers practiced in full contact.
Nebraska Head Coach Mike Riley mentioned it was nice to finally make it to full pads, as the Huskers used a good portion of practice scrimmaging in full contact.
“It is good to get through the progression of what they call acclimatization, I think it is a great idea and I frankly worry more on the days when you don’t have pads on than I do this day when you put full gear on,” Riley said. “We did however do a little more ‘live football’ on our first day of full gear than before.”
Riley said that during scrimmages the main goal of the team is to get defenders in the right position to make the tackle—and actually finish the tackle, so when game time comes Sept. 5 against BYU, the Blackshirts will be already in season form.
“What we hope to get out of scrimmages is allowing defenders to really know if they are in a position to make the tackle, because they actually get to finish it,” he said. “There are so many times in practice when you think you might have the tackle and you are pretty confident in the position you have, but you never really know tell you get the chance to finish.”
According to Riley, all three back-up quarterbacks have gotten their fair share of reps during practice, as Ryker Fyfe, AJ Bush and Zach Darlington have all seen snaps with the second-string offense.
“We have really tried to be fair with the quarterback rotation after Tommy’s first-team reps. I think all of them have taken second team snaps—what we are trying to do is give them all reps with other units, so they get a chance to play with the second string linemen, receivers and so on.”
A player that stood out at practice Tuesday night during the scrimmage portion was redshirt freshman running back Mikale Wilbon. Wilbon, a native of Chicago had several nice long runs. Riley mentioned that Wilbon has impressed so far in camp, making a tremendous jump from where he was at in spring.
“Mikale I think has had a big jump from spring practice to today. I think he has made a very, very good improvement and I think that comes from him being able to utilize his ability. It is exciting—he is doing well.”
