Freshman Jack McVeigh compared Nebraska’s stay in Valencia, Spain to his home in Australia.
Valencia, Spain – After two games in three days and extensive sightseeing, Wednesday’s day in Valencia is the most relaxing day of the week for the Huskers. The city, located on the east coast of Spain, is the third-largest city with just over 800,000 residents and was founded in 138 BC.
The Huskers’ schedule today is pretty light, as the team did a short walking tour of the beach and the areas around the hotel and had the afternoon off for sightseeing around the city or some more time at the beach located steps away from the hotel.
For freshman Jack McVeigh, Valencia reminds him of his hometown in Australia.
“It is beautiful, and we are right on the beach,” McVeigh said. “It was a little bit like home with everyone walking around on the beach and there was a nice little active area so it has that feel.”
For McVeigh, one of five freshmen on the trip this week, the time in Spain has brought the group closer together and gave them a chance to learn more about each other.
“It is good because it gives us a chance to be together as a team,” McVeigh said. “Being away from home and just hanging out with each other has been a great experience.”
The Huskers’ time in Valencia coincides with the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Playoff match between Valencia and AS Monaco, and the Huskers will take in the match tonight. A sellout of 55,000 is expected at Mestalla Stadium for the match, which begins at 8:45 p.m.
“It is going to be exciting. I’ve never been to a game like that, and it’s a big game so it should be exciting.”
The Huskers will wrap up their stay in Valencia on Thursday morning before heading to Barcelona for the final leg of the tour.
