Embattled City Official Fired in Nebraska Panhandle

sidney-towerSIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Sidney has fired its public works director who was convicted of a misdemeanor for looking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and seeing her only partially clothed.

John Hehnke was fired on Tuesday after working for the city for 10 years.

City officials declined to comment on the firing because it is a personnel matter. The newspaper was unable to reach Hehnke Wednesday.

Hehnke’s problems stem from a January 2014 incident when his ex-girlfriend filed a complaint. He was cited that night but Sidney Police Chief B.J. Wilkinson decided not to pursue the case.

Wilkinson pleaded no contest to obstructing government operations and was sentenced last month to 30 days in jail. But his appeal of the sentence is due to be heard Sept. 28.
