Lincoln, Neb.— The Nebraska soccer team’s senior duo Katie Kraeutner and Jaylyn Odermann led the Huskers to a 3-0 win over No. 23 Kansas for the 2015 season opener on Friday night. The defeat occurred in front of 1,720 fans at Hibner Stadium, the program’s largest home crowd since Aug. 27, 2004.

The Big Red didn’t waste any time getting on the board, as Kraeutner tricked a defender off an assist from Odermann from 25 yards out to find the net in the ninth minute to lead the Jayhawks 1-0 in the first half.

Odermann kept ablaze in the minutes to follow, heading in a ball after a cross in the box from junior Courtney Claassen at the 13 minute mark. Odermann scored her second consecutive goal in the 37th minute, taking advantage of a penalty kick just inside the box to extend the Husker lead to 3-0.

Despite Kansas outshooting NU 13-7, the Huskers were able to keep the Jayhawks at bay in the second half to come away with the 3-0 win.

Sophomore Erika Johnson notched her first career regular season start at goalkeeper, including her first shutout and six saves.

The Huskers will return to Hibner Field for their second game of the season on Friday, Aug. 28 against Central Michigan. Match time is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. CT.
