Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team wrapped up Fall Camp on Saturday, as the Huskers scrimmaged inside of Memorial Stadium for two hours. More than 1,500 members of the Nebraska student section ‘The Boneyard’ were in attendance, during a hot and windy Lincoln afternoon.
Nebraska Head Coach Mike Riley spoke with the media following Saturday’s scrimmage, mentioning that it was very nice to practice in front of some Husker students, while also getting a chance to play ‘live’ football.
“The main goal was getting to scrimmage and make plays, the main goal. The other one is competition and the other is doing it in the stadium and inviting students,” Riley said. “It was really hard because we have so many pieces that will not be gone for long but they are not there now. So it is very disruptive moving guys around.
According to Riley, NU’s quarterbacks performed well during Saturday’s scrimmage, especially returning starter Tommy Armstrong.
“I thought they functioned pretty well, I thought Tommy did a nice job, again there was some stuff that was not real pretty but boy did he throw a couple nice touchdown passes—great reads. There was some nice things that were good to see.”
Riley also announced the five walk-ons that have earned scholarships, according to Riley—production was one of the key components in determining who was put on scholarship.
“Production, both spring and fall. Trey Foster is a great example of a guy who did okay in the spring and really surfaced in Fall Camp. I was proud of the work he did.”
QUOTE OF THE DAY – COACH RILEY ON JAMAL TURNER |
---|
“I am proud of Jamal, Jamal has lasted. He is like the last man standing out there. He came into camp in great shape, he lost a lot of weight during the summer. He had great intentions and he has made a lot of plays. I am thankful that he came back for his last year here, I know that was probably weird—him losing everybody that he knew, but he came back and I think we will be better off for it.” |
