LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man must serve more than 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl last year.

Lancaster County District Judge Andrew Jacobsen sentenced 29-year-old Sean Demitrius Phillips on Tuesday to 15 to 35 years on a charge of first-degree sexual assault.

Phillips will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years. He will be credited with more than a year for time already served.

A defense attorney, who sought a shorter sentence, argued Phillips and the girl had consensual sex in 2014 and the case was one of statutory rape. A prosecutor said the teen told Phillips “no” multiple times.

Phillips was convicted previously of attempted first-degree sexual assault and must already be registered as a sex offender.
