NPCC in search of new mascot

NPCC Knights LogoWanted - a mascot to represent the North Platte Community College Knights athletic programs.

“This is uncharted waters,” said Chuck Salestrom, area associate vice president of public information and marketing. “The Public Information Office was given the responsibility this year of formalizing a mascot program.”

NPCC is seeking an extroverted individual with a certain degree of theatrical and dance skills to be the official mascot for the Knights. The individual must be motivated, with a strong desire to engage and entertain audiences while enhancing the college experience.

“We’re also looking for a guide for the mascot,” said Salestrom. “Because of low visibility in the knight suit, it has been recommended to us that the mascot have a guide for safety purposes.”

The jobs can be rotated, so that the guide has the opportunity to serve as the mascot as well. Both positions would require a time commitment of at least five hours, but no more than 10 hours per week for two 16-week semesters. Compensation would be $10 per hour for both the guide and the mascot.

The plan is to have the Knight and guide attend elementary school functions, community happenings, ribbon cuttings and other activities not yet identified in addition to appearing at the college’s home athletic events.

“We’re not limiting our search to students,” Salestrom said. “We want individuals who will take the jobs seriously and be champions for NPCC.”

For NPCC students to be considered, they must be in good academic standing and not subject to college discipline, per the student handbook.

The mascot and guide will serve yearlong terms, from July 1-June 30. A person can be the mascot or guide again after the one-year term is up, however, he or she may be required to participate in a new selection process.

More information about the mascot and guide jobs can be found under the “employment” section at www.mpcc.edu, or by calling 535-3636. Those applying for one of the positions must submit a completed application form to MPCC Human Resources, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, NE 69101 by Sept. 4.

The Human Resources Office can also be reached at 535-3680, 535-3679, or at [email protected].
