OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been told to change the way he’s been feeding birds in his backyard.

Nick Huerta said feeding birds is his passion. He welcomes the blue jays, cardinals and other birds and squirrels that show up. He acknowledges, though, that some of his neighbors don’t much care for his feathered and furry guests.

He was stunned by a Sept. 3 letter from the county health department that said he’d created a public health nuisance by putting bread and nuts on the ground. The department asked him to use hanging feeders instead. He says the feeders can spill food on the ground, but he’s complied with the request.

He says he’s scheduled to meet with health department officials on Tuesday.
