Woman Leaps from Moving Car After Spotting Spider, Causing Crash

Brown_spiderSYRACUSE, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana woman who jumped from her moving car after discovering a spider on her shoulder, leading to a crash that injured her 9-year-old son, likely won’t face charges.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chad Hill says Angela Kipp was backing the car out of her driveway in Syracuse on Friday afternoon when she saw the spider and leaped out while the car was in reverse.

Her son in the back seat climbed into the driver’s seat and tried to step on the brake. He instead hit the gas pedal, sending the vehicle into a school bus. He was taken to a hospital with minor head injuries. No children were on the bus. Its driver wasn’t injured.

Hill said Monday that Kipp likely won’t be charged.

A restaurant that was always hopping at lunchtime, on prom night and many other nights has closed its doors in North Platte.

Employees at The Depot, 520 North Jeffers Street, were told last Wednesday that the restaurant would be closing.

The Post has not been able to confirm a reason, other than it was for personal reasons with the ownership.

The Depot is owned by Deb and David McNew, and was also the home of The Rail bar, which provided live entertainment and adult beverages.

The restaurant also served as a meeting place for numerous clubs and organizations.

The restaurant was badly damaged in an August storm that raged through North Platte, but was soon reopened for business.

Sources say the property will most likely be sold.

The Post will bring you more information on this story when it becomes available.

Doctor: Man Accused of Killing Wife Was Delirious from Pot

Colorado-MarijuanaDENVER (AP) — A doctor says a Colorado man accused of killing his wife after eating marijuana-infused candy bought at a legal pot shop was experiencing psychotic-like symptoms due to the drug.

The doctor’s findings are contained in recently filed court documents in the case of 49-year-old Richard Kirk, who is charged with first-degree murder in the April 2014 shooting death of his wife, Kristine. Police say he ate the candy, then shot her while she described his erratic behavior on a 911 call.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity on Friday.

The doctor, Andrew Monte is a defense witness. He says Kirk was intoxicated with THC, the drug’s psychoactive ingredient, which led to delirium.

Prosecutors say Kirk and his wife had been fighting over marital and financial problems.

Nebraska Death Penalty Foes Challenge ‘Slanted’ Ballot Language

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Opponents of a campaign to reinstate Nebraska’s death penalty have filed a lawsuit arguing that ballot language drafted by the attorney general’s office is slanted in favor of death penalty supporters.

The lawsuit filed Monday in Lancaster County District Court asks a judge to declare that the wording is unlawfully misleading and confusing.

Nebraska lawmakers passed a death penalty repeal law in May. The ballot language submitted by Republican Attorney General Doug Peterson informs voters that retaining the law would eliminate capital punishment and change the “maximum” penalty for first-degree murder to life in prison.

Death penalty opponents say the word “maximum” is misleading because it incorrectly implies that first-degree murder convicts could face a lesser sentence than life in prison.
