Omaha Man Gets Warning About Feeding Birds

birdsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been told to change the way he’s been feeding birds in his backyard.

Nick Huerta said feeding birds is his passion. He welcomes the blue jays, cardinals and other birds and squirrels that show up. He acknowledges, though, that some of his neighbors don’t much care for his feathered and furry guests.

He was stunned by a Sept. 3 letter from the county health department that said he’d created a public health nuisance by putting bread and nuts on the ground. The department asked him to use hanging feeders instead. He says the feeders can spill food on the ground, but he’s complied with the request.

He says he’s scheduled to meet with health department officials on Tuesday.

Iowan Convicted of Stabbing Co-Worker at Nebraska Meat Plant

stabbingDAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A 50-year-old Iowa man is scheduled to be sentenced in November for knifing a co-worker at a meat plant in northeast Nebraska.

Online court records say Mahamud Abib, of Sioux City, Iowa, pleaded no contest and was convicted last week in Dakota County on felony assault and weapons charges. His sentencing is set for Nov. 4.

The knifing occurred April 24 at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Dakota City, where Abib had been working for less than a week. A court document says Abib reported that the man had upset him by thrusting his pelvis near Abib. Abib says he retaliated as a message to other workers that he would not tolerate insults.

The co-worker was treated at a hospital.

Wyoming Man Arrested Following Pursuit in Western Nebraska

police-lights-redA pursuit that started in Wyoming ends in Nebraska after troopers use stop sticks to disable the vehicle.

Just after 3:00 p.m., (MDT), Nebraska law enforcement was alerted by the Wyoming Highway Patrol that they had discontinued a pursuit of a 2005 gray Explorer at the state line. The driver of the vehicle who was believed to be armed was wanted on a warrant out of Laramie County for Stalking.

The vehicle entered Nebraska eastbound on I-80 where the Kimball County Sheriff’s Office and the Kimball Police Department picked up the pursuit.

At approximately 3:20 pm, three miles west of Potter, the Nebraska State Patrol took over the pursuit. Troopers successfully deployed two sets of stop sticks flattening tires on the vehicle. Just west of Sidney the vehicle went into the median, crossed the westbound lanes and ended up in the north ditch.

The driver failed to respond to commands to exit the vehicle. A portion of westbound I-80 near the vehicle was closed as troopers continued to try and contact the driver.  Approximately 45 minutes after the pursuit ended, the driver, identified as Joseph Mladenik, 40, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

Mladenik, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, was transported to a hospital in Sidney for observation. Once released, he was lodged in the Scottsbluff County Jail on charges to include Felony Flight to Avoid Arrest, 4th Offense DUI, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

The Nebraska State Patrol was assisted by the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office and the Sidney Police Department.
