Governor Ricketts Announces Wellness Award Winners

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Forty-three Nebraska companies have received the Governor’s Wellness Award, which honors employers that develop successful workplace wellness programs.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced the winners Thursday at the Capitol. The companies come from 28 Nebraska communities.

The Governor’s Wellness Award was created eight years ago, and has two categories. The Sower Award recognizes workplaces that have established quality wellness programs, while the Grower Award honors businesses and organizations that demonstrate significant improvement in employee health behaviors.

The awards will be presented to this year’s winners at three separate ceremonies during the months of September and October. Events will be held in Gering on Sept. 22, Kearney on Sept. 24 and Lincoln on Oct. 20.

Man Charged with Sexual Assault in Lincoln Gets Prison

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 45-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl in Lincoln has been sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison.

Fidel Romero was sentenced Thursday on a charge of first-degree sexual assault. He must serve about 26 years before he’s eligible for parole.

Romero is accused of sexually molesting the girl over several incidents when he lived in Lincoln. The girl told a counselor at her middle school that Romero began molesting her in 2010.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1OE5W9B ) Romero was arrested in New Mexico in 2014. He was later brought back to Lincoln, where he pleaded no contest to the charge last month.

A defense attorney says Romero was sexually abused when he was 8 years old, and it could have affected his behavior.

Flags in Nebraska to Fly at Half-Staff on Patriot Day

half-staff-flagLINCOLN – Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day.  Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 11, 2015.

Governor Ricketts also issued the following statement in observance of Patriot Day:

“Today is a time for us to pause and solemnly remember the lives of the many Americans that were killed 14 years ago.  We can never forget the events of September 11, 2001, and the many brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country as we continue to seek an end to Islamic extremism.”

On Patriot Day, the Governor will attend the 9/11 Minute of Silence Ceremony at Memorial Park in Omaha.

Police: Man Tries to Take Baby from Car; Mom Fights Him Off

police-lights-redNORCROSS, Ga. (AP) — Police say a man tried to kidnap a baby from a car in a McDonald’s parking lot, but her mother and another relative fought him off.

Police in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross say the family left McDonald’s on Wednesday morning. The mother buckled her 10-month-old daughter into a car seat in the back and walked to the front. Police say 19-year-old Sterlyn Reynolds then opened the back door and tried to pull the baby out. Police say the mom, the relative and the man struggled — biting and hitting — until she freed the girl and went back inside McDonald’s.

The baby suffered minor injuries.

Reynolds, of Dacula, is charged with kidnapping and cruelty to children. It wasn’t clear whether Reynolds had a lawyer to contact for comment.

Police aren’t naming the mother or relative but said neither knew Reynolds.

NP Police, Fire Departments to Host Open House Friday

The North Platte Police and Fire Departments are holding an open house on September 11th from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Public Safety Building for anyone wanting to show their support to these two agencies sworn to serve our community.

Brief tours will be given to those wanting to walk through during those hours along with a free lunch. Food will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 PM and will be provided by Nebraskaland National Bank.

The Public is welcome to stop by as the two departments hug and make up following the Battle of the Badges event (blood draw) that took place today.

NPCC Lady Knights to Compete in Pizza Hut Invite

pizza hut inviteThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team will travel to Sterling, Colo. this weekend to participate in the Pizza Hut Invitational, hosted by Northeastern Junior College.  The tournament will take place on September 11-12.

The Lady Knights are 6-6 on the season.  They are led in kills by Valerie Most with 117 kills and MaKenna Ketter with 107.   Shelby Wolever and Aryn Meisinger lead the team in set assists with 154 and 139 respectively. Jessica Lovitt and Samantha Morgan share the team lead in blocks with 31 each.  Megan Chintala leads the team in digs with 161. Nebraska Tax Receipts Higher Than Projected in August

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state government collected nearly 3 percent more than expected in taxes last month.

The Department of Revenue reported Thursday that net tax receipts totaled $385 million, which is 2.7 percent above the state’s certified forecast.

The department says net individual and corporate income taxes were higher than predicted, while net sales-and-use and miscellaneous were lower than the state forecast.

The comparisons were based on the forecast made by the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board in April.

The state’s new fiscal year began on July 1.

 

Storm Piles Up Hail, Knocks Out Power in Nebraska Town

rain-heavyWYMORE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a storm left hail piled up and limbs and trees knocked down in the southeast Nebraska city of Wymore.

Emergency manager Mark Meints says hail was 2 inches deep in some parts of town after the storm blasted through between 1 a.m. and 1:40 a.m. Thursday. Tree and limbs blocked some streets.

No injuries have been reported. The Norris Public Power District website showed that power had been restored to its Wymore customers.

National Weather Service meteorologist Becky Kern says winds of more than 80 mph lashed the town as well as heavy rain.

Forecasters Warn Storms Possible in Central Plains Thursday

severe-weatherNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters say large, damaging hail, a few tornadoes and high winds are possible in parts of the Central Plains.

The Storm Prediction Center said the greater chance for strong storms Thursday afternoon would be in northern Kansas, with a lesser chance from extreme southern Nebraska into the northwestern Ozarks.

Storms are also possible in the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles and far northwestern Arkansas.

Areas south of a cold front should see the strongest surface heating Thursday, increasing the potential for high winds, even for a few hours after dark.

There is a risk of hail and possibly tornadoes early during storm development, with the threat changing to high winds later, according to the forecasters.

Former Employee Must Pay Back Buffalo County

gavel-and-scaleKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A man who prosecutors say stole construction materials from Buffalo County while an employee has been ordered to pay $5,000 restitution.

58-year-old Ross Karabel, of Miller, pleaded no contest and was convicted last week of misdemeanor theft. He also was fined $500.

Prosecutors say Karabel stole scrap metal and other items related to county construction projects between May 2012 and November 2014.

Karabel was hired by Buffalo County in October 2005, and his last county working day was Dec. 30.
