Heading into Wednesday night’s match against Michigan State, Nebraska’s Justine Wong-Orantes was named the espnW National Player of the Week following her performance at Penn State and Ohio State last weekend.
Wong-Orantes helped lead the fourth-ranked Huskers to a 3-2 comeback win over No. 1 Penn State on Friday with a career-high 30 digs. Wong-Orantes produced a number of highlight-reel digs to keep rallies alive and spark the Huskers back into the match. Twenty-one of her 30 digs came in the final three sets, with 12 coming in the third set, the most by a Husker in a set since Kayla Banwarth had 13 in one set in 2009.
A native of Cypress, Calif., Wong-Orantes totaled 41 digs on the weekend, averaging 4.1 digs per set. The junior libero also earned Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday.
Wong-Orantes is the first Husker to receive a national-player-of-the-week honor since Kelsey Robinson in 2013 (AVCA).
