Huskers Capture Six Weight Class Crowns

Brookings, S.D. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska wrestling team won six weight class titles in the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open at Frost Arena on Sunday. A total of 13 Husker wrestlers earned spots on the podium at the tournament.

No. 6 Jake Sueflohn won three of his five matches by bonus points en route to the 149-pound title. The senior from Watertown, Wis., who missed last season with an injury, tallied a pin, technical fall and major decision before notching a pair of decisions in the final two rounds.

At 133 pounds, No. 12 Eric Montoya defeated Colton McCrystal by a 6-5 decision in the finals. Montoya had two major decisions and one fall on Sunday. McCrystal collected one technical fall and two decisions in the tournament.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Berger won the 157-pound title with a 6-4 sudden victory-1 over Minnesota’s Brandon Kingsley. Berger added a pin in the opening round and a technical fall in the semifinals.

At 165 pounds, Dustin Williams won four decisions on his way to the weight class crown. The redshirt freshman from Gardner, Kan., collected a 1-0 decision in the finals over Tyler McNutt of North Dakota State.

Junior Micah Barnes opened the tournament with a pair of major decisions before winning two narrow decisions en route to the 174-pound title. He edged South Dakota State’s David Kocer in the finals, 3-2.

At 125 pounds, 12th-ranked Tim Lambert and Kris Williams shared first place. Lambert, a junior from Forest Hills, Mich., pinned two of his opponents. Williams, a true freshman from South Holland, Ill., had one fall and two decisions.

Additional Huskers to place include Collin Purinton (third at 141), Jaquon Sowell (sixth at 174), No. 7 Aaron Studebaker (third at 197), Patrick Grayson (tied for third at heavyweight) and Collin Jensen (tied for third at heavyweight).

The Huskers host their annual Coaches Clinic/Intrasquad on Friday at 5 p.m. (CT). NU’s dual season begins Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Huskers face Lock Haven, Oregon State and Lehigh, starting at 8:20 a.m. (CT).
