Thomas “Dewey” Powell

Thomas “Dewey” Powell, age 93 of North Platte passed away at North Platte Care Center on Wednesday November 11, 2015.
Dewey was born on September 17, 1922 in North Platte to Albert and Ethel (Jolly) Powell. As a young man he joined the Army serving from 1942 to 1945 in the 1st Calvary Division. He was a Machine Gunner in the Philippines and received the Purple Heart. On November 21, 1952 he was united in marriage to Rae Lucille Maher. Over the years he worked at Fremont Dairy for 8 years; Montgomery Wards for 33 years retiring in 1980. After his retirement he did custom haying in partnership with his son Merle. Dewey’s hobbies were fishing, hunting and playing horse shoes.
Dewey is survived by his children Merle (Sheila) Powell of North Platte, Ellen (Gary) Dimmitt of North Platte, Maxine Baumgartner of Grand Island; Steve (Renae) Powell of Wisconsin and Linda Richardson of North Platte; 29 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; 20 great great grandchildren; as well as extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rae Lucille; son Roger Powell; grandchildren Sheryl Powell and Myron Powell; and siblings Levi Powell, Orpha Greeley, Janie Steel, Grace Johnson, Ray Powell, Mae Kelso, Martha Houser, Elcia Keup and an infant sister.
Memorials are suggested in his name and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 17, 2015 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday November 16, 2015 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
