LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s largest refugee settlement agency says it will continue to help Syrians who are seeking asylum despite concerns raised by Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Lutheran Family Services says it will honor the governor’s request to suspend working with Syrians who wish to come to the country as refugees. But the group said that doesn’t prevent it from aiding Syrians who arrive by other means.

Ruth Henneman, the group’s vice president of development, says that includes helping Syrian families who have sought asylum in Nebraska since civil war engulfed their country in 2011. The organization has helped 10 such Syrians in the past three years.

Ricketts has asked the state’s resettlement organizations to halt efforts to bring Syrian refugees to Nebraska until security concerns are addressed.
