Former NPCC Lady Knight, Liewer, Receives Volleyball Accolades

Former North Platte Community College Lady Knight Volleyball player Shannon Liewer was named American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Honorable Mention of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for the 2015 volleyball season.

Liewer, played for the Lady Knights during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The last two seasons she played for the Peru State College Bobcats.

Liewer, who is from Imperial, was a libero for the 25-13 Bobcat volleyball team in the 2015 season.  During her senior season for the Bobcats Liewer had 752 defensive digs in 135 sets.  She had 33 service aces and 18 set assists.

Ted Harshbarger, sports information director at Peru State College, said in a press release, “It is believed Liewer is the first Bobcat volleyball player since Jill (Parker) Scanlon, of Auburn, was named All-American Second Team in 1995.”

Earlier, Liewer was named to the AVCA / NAIA Midwest Region Team and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Volleyball First Team.  Liewer has a 3.91 grade point average. Liewer was also named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.

As a Lady Knight, Liewer was an All-Region IX Division II player, and a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-American Honorable Mention.

Liewer is sixth on the Lady Knights career digs list with 1342 defensive digs.

Sally Thalken, retired NPCC Lady Knight Volleyball coach said, “Shannon was a delight to coach!  She has a fun personality and worked as hard in the classroom as she did in the gym. She was a wonderful leader on our teams and her teammates had tremendous respect for her. I’m so proud of her accomplishments at Peru State and know she will continue to be as successful in her chosen career. Shannon is the ultimate example of a student athlete.”

Liewer is a senior biochemistry major.
