AUDIO: NPCC Lady Knights defeat Colby in Overtime

npcc colbyThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team defeated the Colby Community College Lady Trojans 66-62 in overtime on Wednesday, December 9.

The Lady Knights led in the first quarter by a score of 9-4 with five and a half minutes to go for their largest lead in the game.  At the end of the first quarter the Lady Knights led by one 15-14.  In the first quarter there were four lead changes and three ties.

With 9:04 left in the second quarter the Lady Trojans took the lead 18-17 on a put back by Hanna Hermann. At halftime the Lady Trojans led 27-25.

The Lady Trojans never trailed in the third quarter, leading 47-37 at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Trojans took their largest lead of the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a field goal by Kyra Tucker, making the score 49-37. The Lady Knights went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four 49-45.  Colby’s McKenzie Curry hit a three-pointer to increase the lead to seven.

The Lady Knights chipped away at the lead to make the score 58-54 in favor of the Lady Trojans.  Colby’s Clara Schwartz fouled Sarah Mahr, who made both of her free throws to make the score 58-56.  Aubrey Thomas committed an offensive foul to turn the ball back over to the Lady Knights.  Amber Perryman of Colby fouled Mickenzie Brennan, who made her two free throws with 14 seconds to go to send the game into overtime at 58 each.

In overtime, Zulema Viescas made a three-pointer to give the Lady Knights the lead 61-58.  The Lady Knights held on to the lead throughout the overtime period.  Brennan secured the win with another two free throws.

The Lady Knights are now 5-4 on the season.  They were led by Mahr with 17 points.  Suhmer Mitchell finished with 14 points off the bench.  Brennan, Mahr and Mitchell each had eight rebounds to lead the Lady Knights.

The Lady Trojans drop to 4-9 on the season.  They were led by Curry with 16 points.  Three other Lady Trojans finished in double figures scoring.  Thomas had 12 points, 10 points coming from the free throw line. Perryman also finished with 12 points and Tucker had 10.  The Lady Trojans had 20 points from the free throw line.

The Lady Knights return home on Friday to face York College Junior Varsity.  If the Lady Knights win, it will be the 200th win at NPCC for Lady Knight’s Head Coach Richard Thurin.  Game time is at 5 pm at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
