Policy drafted for transgender student athletes in Nebraska

NSAA logoLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska School Activities Association has proposed a draft policy that would put the initial decision to let transgender students in high school sports in the hands of parents and local school districts.

The proposal was advanced Wednesday. The policy says parents and the student would have to notify the school if the student identifies with a gender different from what is listed on a birth certificate.

The school can then decide whether to pursue a waiver from the association. Any requests would then be evaluated by the newly formed Gender Identity Eligibility Committee, which would consider evidence of hormone therapy or operations and statements that demonstrate consistency in gender identity.

Decisions may be appealed to an association committee.

A final vote on the policy is set for January.
