Chiefs cruise past Ravens 34-14 for 8th straight victory

Kansas City Chiefs LogoBALTIMORE (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs capitalized on a variety of miscues by the Baltimore Ravens and extended their winning streak to eight games with a 34-14 victory Sunday.

Nebraska Wins Fourth National Title

Omaha, Neb. – The Nebraska volleyball team won its fourth national title Saturday night, sweeping the Texas Longhorns at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Kelsey Fien’s 22nd swing of the night tooled the Texas block and set off a raucous celebration in front of an NCAA-record crowd of 17,561 inside the CenturyLink Center, most of whom were wearing red.

The Huskers won their first national title since taking the crown in 2006, when Omaha hosted the NCAA Championships for the first time. Huskers Hand Out Team Honors

The Nebraska football team recognized its 2015 team award winners on Sunday as part of its season banquet in Lincoln.

Head Coach Mike Riley thanked the players, coaches and staff for their efforts during the season and staff members handed out awards to a number of Huskers.

Senior fullback Andy Janovich earned three awards. A Gretna native, Janovich was a key part of the Nebraska offense and also the Huskers’ top special teams tackler. Janovich was presented the Tom Novak Trophy, one of the oldest Nebraska senior awards, dating back to 1950. The award is selected by a vote of media that cover Nebraska on a daily basis. Lincoln Woman Dies After Truck Leaves Road and Rolls Over

sarpy-co.-sheriffLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a rollover crash that killed a 20-year-old Lincoln woman.

The Sarpy County Sheriff’s office said the crash happened around 6:20 a.m. Sunday along U.S. Highway 31 in Springfield.

The driver lost control of the 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck, and it wound up on its roof in a ditch. Tiffany Hofmeister died, and initially the driver couldn’t be found.

Around noon, the driver, Colin Larsen was found emerging from a field about a mile west of the crash. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Shepard Sets Record in Husker Win

Lincoln – Jessica Shepard set a Nebraska freshman record with 35 points while adding eight rebounds and a career-high four steals to power the Huskers to a 90-67 women’s basketball win Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Shepard’s 35 points came on 12-of-16 shooting from the floor and included 11 free throws. Her performance surpassed Nebraska’s previous freshman mark of 34 points by Debra Powell on Feb. 25, 1982 against Notre Dame. Continue reading “Shepard Sets Record in Husker Win”

3 Nebraska Communities Receive Community Development Grants

economyLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Three Nebraska communities have received community development funding distributed by the state.

The Department of Economic Development awarded a total of nearly $84,000 to Clearwater, Roca and Schuyler.

The federal Community Development Block Grant money will help Roca and Schuyler update their comprehensive plans. It also will allow Clearwater to conduct housing and blight studies.

Planning activities that are eligible for funding include environmental assessments, downtown revitalization projects and community strategic planning.

Nebraska State Patrol Begins Special Holiday Enforcement

NSPBeginning Friday, December 18 and continuing through Sunday, January 3, 2016, the Nebraska State Patrol will take part in the national “You Drink & Drive You Lose” (YDYDYL) campaign in an effort to remove impaired drivers from our roadways.

“Impaired driving spells holiday heartache, not holiday cheer,” said Colonel Bradley Rice, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We are asking all motorists to partner with us to help ensure everyone can be home for the holidays. Through voluntary compliance with all traffic safety laws you can help keep our roadways safe.”

As part of the “You Drink & Drive You Lose” campaign, troopers and communications specialists will work overtime hours during the special enforcement which encompasses both the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. A nearly $22,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS) will help to pay for the extra enforcement.

Motorists are reminded to always wear their seat belt, never drive impaired or distracted, obey the posted speed limit and never travel faster than conditions allow.

Travelers can keep up to date with the latest weather and road conditions by utilizing 511, Nebraska’s Advanced Traveler Information System. The system can be accessed by dialing 511 or online at < www.511.nebraska.gov >. A Nebraska 511 mobile app is also available to download at no cost for smartphone users. Simply search your app provider for Nebraska 511.

Nebraska Ranks 32nd in How It Runs Food Assistance Program

accessnebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska says it continues to improve the way it runs its economic and food assistance programs.

The USDA says the AccessNebraska program ranked 32nd in the timeliness of how it handled applications for food stamps in the first half of 2015.

That’s up from 39th last year and 52nd in 2013.

Courtney Phillips is CEO of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Phillips says it’s excited to see continued improvement in the state’s benefits programs.

Last month, the average time to process an application was 11.5 days. That’s down considerably from November 2014 when the wait time peaked at 40.9 days.

Lawmakers Push for Broad-Based Property Tax Relief in 2016

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are gearing up for next year’s legislative session with a focus on broad-based property tax relief for city dwellers as well as farmers and ranchers.

Legislative leaders and Gov. Pete Ricketts have pegged property taxes as one of the top priorities for the session, despite a projected budget shortfall.

Sen. Mike Gloor of Grand Island says he expects an attempt to slow the sharp land value increases that have forced farmers and ranchers to pay more in taxes. Gloor says he and others are also looking at proposals that would benefit residential and commercial properties.

Speaker of the Legislature Galen Hadley says he expects the issue to dominate the short, 60-day session that begins on Jan. 6.

Omaha Police Say Shooting Death May Have Been an Accident

crime-scene-police-shootOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Police say the shooting death of a 24-year-old man may have been an accident.

Police were called to a home in northwest Omaha shortly after midnight Saturday. Officers found Tyler Andersen dead when they arrived.

Police interviewed a witness, and detectives are investigating the incident as an accidental shooting.

But prosecutors will review the evidence after the investigation is complete to determine if charges are warranted.

Police did not immediately release any details of the shooting or explain why they believe it was an accidental shooting.
