Omaha Parents Getting Early Warning About School Bus Cuts

school-busOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha families are getting early warning about school bus cutbacks scheduled to begin in fall 2017.

Letters were mailed last week to parents of students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade who could be affected.

Over the next several weeks, families whose eligibility for busing could change in 2017 — an estimated 1,800 students — will receive notices from the district. The notices will say that, based on the families’ current addresses, their students won’t be provided school bus rides to their current schools in the 2017-18 school year.

School officials say they want families to have plenty of time to absorb any busing shifts.

The school board approved the overhauled student assignment plan in June. The plan affects only elementary and middle school students.

Lincoln Man Accused of Helping Another in Attack on Good Samaritan

lancaster-county-sheriffLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Nebraska have arrested a man in connection to an attack against a good Samaritan on Christmas Eve.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old Bryan K. Reiber, of Lincoln, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of aiding and abetting terroristic threats. Court records do not list any attorney.

Chief Deputy Jeff Bliemeister says Reiber is one of two men suspected of attacking Joel Schrader on Thursday. Schrader said he was helping the men after they knocked on his door and sought help for car trouble.

Schrader says he went outside to look at their car before the men assaulted him and threaten to shoot him.

Authorities say the men escaped but left behind Reiber’s cellphone. Officials are still looking for the second man.

Man Sues Omaha Comedy Club, Claims Leg Was Broken While Hypnotized

lawsuit-settlementOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man is suing an Omaha comedy club, claiming he broke his leg while under hypnosis during a 2014 show.

38-year-old William M. Bendorf of Omaha filed the lawsuit this month against the Funny Bone Comedy Club.

Bendorf’s attorney says the performer believed Bendorf was no longer hypnotized when he sent him back to his seat. The lawsuit says Bendorf was still in a trance and walked off the stage, breaking his leg.

A woman who answered a phone at the club Monday referred questions to the club manager, who she said was out of town. The manager didn’t immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment on the club’s behalf.

LINCOLN — Continued sightings of a moose within the city limits of North Platte have prompted Nebraska Game and Parks Commission officials to immobilize and relocate the moose to a wildlife management area.

Nebraska Game and Parks biologists worked with local law enforcement and a local veterinarian to move the moose from North Platte city limits to a wildlife management area on the afternoon of Dec. 28. Commission officials and local law enforcement have kept a close eye on the moose that has wandered in and out of city limits over the past couple of weeks. Increased concern over potential interactions between the moose and humans led to the decision to move it outside of town.

Officials stress that people should not approach the moose to take pictures or attempt to feed it, as moose have been known to become aggressive toward people and pets.

Aggressive moose often show a variety of signs, including pinned back or flattened ears with hair raised around the neck and back. Other signs are a lowered head, stomping feet and teeth clicking or licking of its lips. In the case of a moose charging, people are encouraged to run and not stand their ground.

NP Man Accused of Assaulting Pregnant Ex-Girlfriend

A North Platte man has been booked on felony assault charges after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant ex-girlfriend.
