
North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team upset the McCook Community College Lady Indians 67-64 on Wednesday night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
The Lady Knights started the game with a 3-pointer by Sarah Mahr to take the 3-0 lead. The first quarter was tight and went back and forth. Chante Church had nine of the Lady Indians 15 first quarter points. The Lady Indians led by as much as five points and finished the first quarter leading 15-12.
After the Lady Indians had a field goal by Jovana Jovovic, the Lady Knights went on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 17. The remainder of the quarter remained close with the biggest differential being three points with the Lady Indians leading 29-26.
McCook opened up the game in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Knights 22-19 to lead 51-45.
In the fourth quarter, with the Lady Indians leading 53-47, the Lady Knights started their comeback. With just under five minutes to play, Thomesha Wilson hit a 3-pointer to give the Knights a one point lead 59-58. The game continued to go back and forth and was tied at 64 with 1:09 to play. With eighteen seconds to go the Lady Indians called a timeout. When they came out of the timeout Djimonii Jackson stole the ball from Church and was driving for a go-ahead field goal.
She was fouled by Kaylea Watson to put Jackson on the line. Jackson missed the first free throw, but made the second to give the Lady Knights a 65-64 lead.
The Lady Indians had one more chance to win the game but Jackson once again stole the ball from Watson and made a lay-up for the win.
The Lady Knights move back to .500 at 7-7 and were led in scoring by Wilson with 16 points. Mahr ended with 15 points and Jackson added 13 points. Maddie Seamann and Suhmer Mitchell grabbed six rebounds each.
The Lady Indians are now 17-2 on the season and were led by Church with 24 points. Jovovic was the only other Lady Indian to score in double figures with 14. Brooksie McWilliams and Jovovic each had seven rebounds.
The Lady Knights travel to Beatrice on Friday to face the Southeast Community College Lady Storm. The game is a Region IX Division II contest. Tip-off is set for 5 pm CST.
