North Platte – It was a good night at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Tuesday night as the North Platte Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams defeated the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen.
The Lady Knights started off the evening by defeating the Plainswomen 69-57. The first quarter saw two ties and five lead changes. The Plainswomen led at the end of the first quarter 21-18.
The Plainswomen started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take their biggest lead of the first half 28-22. The Lady Knights pulled within two after a 6-0 run at 28-26. The Plainswomen did grow the lead back to six at intermission 37-31.
In the first half the Plainswomen shot 44 percent from the floor compared to 36 percent by the Lady Knights.
In the third quarter the Lady Knights started out on a 8-2 run to tie the game at 39. They took the lead back at 43-42 on a layup by Sarah Mahr. At the end of third quarter the Lady Knights held on to a 52-50 lead.
The fourth quarter was all Lady Knights as they outscored the Plainswomen 17-7, never trailing in the quarter.
Suhmer Mitchell was the leader of four Lady Knights to score in double digits with 17 points. Thomesha Wilson was next with 16 points. Maddie Seamann scored 11 points and Mickenzie Brennan scored 10 points.
The Plainswomen were had two players in double figures led by Jessica Remata with 20 points and Jennae Fieldgrove with 16 points.
The Lady Knights improve to 9-7 on the season. The Plainswomen drop to 6-14.
On the men’s side the Knights defeated the Plainsmen 88-81.
The win moves the Knights to a 5-4 record in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub-Region.
The largest lead for either team during the first 11 minutes of the game was four points. The score was tied at 20 when the Plainsmen went on a 10-2 run to take a 30-22 lead with 6:21 to play in the first half. The Plainsmen led at halftime 39-32.
At the beginning of the second half the Knights erased the deficit and tied the game on a layup by Diontae Champion.
The Plainsmen then went on a six point spurt to lead 45-39. The Knights then had their spurt of 11 points to retake the lead at 50-45. After a three-pointer by Garrett Badgett and a field goal by Marcus Cooper, the score was tied at 50. The two teams were tied again at 59 with eight minutes to go.
The Knights took the lead on a free throw by Champion and never trailed again. They led by as much as 11 with three and a half minutes to play.
The Knights, now 13-8 on the season were led by Champion with 20 points. Five Knights scored in double figures. Tyree Peter scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds for his eights double-double on the season. Jordan Mills had 14 points, Michael Mitchell finished with 13 points and Victor Lewis added 10 points.
Cooper led the 8-13 Plainsmen with a game high 33 points. Robert Jones had 14 points and JJ Griffin finished with 10 points. Jones also grabbed nine rebounds for the Plainsmen. The Plainsmen are 4-6 in the South Sub-Region.
