Nebraska Bill Would Create Veterans’ Treatment Court

vietnam-veteranLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker is pushing for a special new court that would focus on veterans.

Sen. John McCollister of Omaha introduced a bill Tuesday that would create the court for a three-year pilot project in Douglas County.

Veterans’ treatment courts have gained popularity in recent years as a way to treat current and former service members who are charged with minor offenses and suffering from service-related illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The bill would require the Nebraska Supreme Court to determine the program’s feasibility at the end of the pilot and recommend whether to expand it to other counties.

Man with Knife Surrenders After 6-Hour Standoff in Omaha

standoffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an armed man has surrendered peacefully after a six-hour standoff with Omaha police.

Officers were sent to a home in the Florence neighborhood around 3:30 p.m. Monday to check a report that someone was being held hostage. The officers found only the man, who was armed with a knife. Several times he threatened to harm himself, but he gave up without incident or apparent injury.

The man was taken to a hospital for mental health evaluation.

Former TierOne CEO Files Motions for Acquittal, New Trial

tierone-bankLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska banker convicted of fraud has filed motions for acquittal or a new trial.

Gil Lundstrom was convicted in November of 12 counts related to the 2010 failure of Lincoln-based TierOne Bank while he was CEO. His sentencing is set for Feb. 24.

The acquittal motion filed Friday says prosecutors didn’t prove each count beyond a reasonable doubt. The motion for a new trial says, among other things, that the court let the jury consider improper hearsay evidence and was wrong to instruct jurors that they could find that Lundstrom willfully sought to remain unaware of any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors say Lundstrom and other bank officers hid losses from regulators and shareholders.

Grand Island Man Pleads Guilty to Stabbing Teen in Aurora

gavel-and-scaleAURORA, Neb. (AP) — A Grand Island man accused of stabbing a teenager in an Aurora park has entered a plea in the case.

18-year-old Brayden Milhon pleaded no contest to second-degree assault Thursday.

In exchange for his plea, charges of terroristic threats and of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony were dropped.

The charges stem from a June 15 stabbing. Court documents say that when police responded to the park, they found Milhon in a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s and a knife in the trash.

Milhon told an officer that he had stabbed the victim, a minor, with a small knife. The officer later learned that Milhon and the victim had agreed to meet to fight.

Sentencing for Milhon is scheduled for Feb. 26.

Nebraskan Convicted of Mail Fraud; Must Pay Restitution

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 67-year-old Nebraska woman has been imprisoned for mail fraud.

Federal prosecutors say Marian Korbelik was sentenced Monday to a year and a day and ordered to pay more than $64,000 in restitution. Korbelik must serve three years of supervised release after she leaves custody.

In October she pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. Prosecutors say that from 2006 through 2011, Korbelik sent falsified financial reports to an out-of-state company she worked for as a part-time bookkeeper. She wrote company checks to herself for payments of what she disguised in the reports as legitimate business expenses.

McCook Man Killed in Crash Near Stratton, Police Say

Hitchcock-County-SheriffMCCOOK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 51-year-old man has died after a rollover accident near Stratton in southwest Nebraska.

The accident occurred around 7:55 a.m. Friday when the man’s car ran off U.S. Highway 34, struck a culvert and rolled. Authorities say he died later at a hospital in Benkelman.

Hitchcock County Sheriff D. Bryan Leggott identified the man as Christopher Klein, of McCook.

Scottsbluff Woman Killed in Wyoming Crash

fatal-accidentPINE BLUFFS, Wyo. (AP) — Authorities say a woman is dead after she rear-ended a commercial truck on Interstate 80 west of Pine Bluffs.

Sgt. David Wagener says 32-year-old Randi Amen, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, crashed into the truck early Sunday morning and died later at a hospital.

Investigators say Amen was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash, and alcohol might have played a role.

The two people in the commercial truck, which was pulling a trailer, were not injured.

The crash marked the second highway fatality in Wyoming this year. There were seven fatalities by this time last year.
