Son of Fallen Nebraska Firefighter Joins Profession

firedptWOOD RIVER, Neb. (AP) — The son of a fallen Nebraska firefighter is following in his father’s footsteps by joining the profession.

Wood River native Matt Woitalewicz received his badge as a firefighter in Lincoln in November. His father, Kenny, died after trying to save an elderly woman in a house fire in 2004.

Woitalewicz’s father was a captain with the Wood River volunteer fire department. He said he wants to honor what his father did.

His mother, Melissa, says she wanted to make sure her son wasn’t becoming a firefighter only because of what happened to his father. She says her son has “what it takes.”

Woitalewicz says he tries not to let worries creep in, but says that’s why all firefighters train and prepare.

Lincoln’s Protected Bike Lane Not Keeping Out Cars, Trucks

bike-laneLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln’s new, 17-block-long protected lane has proved popular with bicyclists.

But, they say, unfortunately, it’s also proved popular with a few car and truck drivers.

The $3.2 million N Street Bike Track connects the Haymarket district on the west side of downtown Lincoln with Antelope Valley trails and beyond to the east.

Cyclist Gary Bentrup said the lane’s curbs and dividers could be confusing some drivers.

The city plans to add more street striping at certain intersections this week to help keep cars in their designated lanes while turning. The city also intends to install more 3- or 4-foot tall reflective plastic tubes in and near the bike lane to deter motorized traffic.

Survey Gives Continuing Signs of Midwest Economic Doldrums

economyOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Figures have dropped for a fifth straight month in a survey of supply managers in nine Midwest and Plains states, providing continuing evidence of a regional economic slowdown.

A report issued Monday says the overall Mid-American Business Conditions Index dropped to 39.6 in December from 40.7 in November, 41.9 in October, 47.7 in September and 49.6 in August.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he again blames manufacturing losses linked to the strong dollar and economic weakness among trading partners.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests economic growth. A score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Pentagon: Hundreds of Military Kids Sexually Abused Annually

department-of-defenseWASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Department data show hundreds of incidents each year of the children of military service members being victims of sexual assault.

The abuse of military dependents is committed most often by male enlisted troops, according to the data provided exclusively to The Associated Press.

The figures offer greater insight into the sexual abuse of children committed by service members, a problem of uncertain scale due to a lack of transparency in the military’s legal proceedings. With more than 1 million military dependents, the number of cases appears statistically small. But for a profession that prides itself on honor and discipline, any episodes of abuse cast a pall.

NP Man, 24, Killed in Rollover Crash

LINCOLN-COUNTY-SHERIFF-1A 24-year-old North Platte man has died following a one-vehicle crash northeast of town, and authorities say it appears alcohol was a factor.

Investigators say the vehicle, driven by Kristian Woodhouse, was southbound on Rolling Hills Road when it failed to negotiate a curve, went out of control, up an embankment and rolled on its top.

Woodhouse was partially ejected from the vehicle and became pinned underneath it.  Deputies say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three females, who were also in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries.

Authorities say it does appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.
