Rex Duane Beam was born October 14th, 1956 at the hospital in Oshkosh, Nebraska. He perished in a fire February 5th, 2016 that took the ancestral home on Clear Creek in northwest Keith County, Nebraska. In the intervening years, he loved and was loved by the citizens of Keith and Garden County and lived his entire life on the family farm. Rex rode a horse to grade school at District 27 for 9 years and graduated from Lewellen Rural High School in 1975. During this period he was active in 4-H, Cub & Boy Scouts and MYF. Following his secondary education, he received an associate’s degree from Central Community College in Hastings and was engaged in construction with his father until the latter’s death in 1997. In 2005 he began his beloved employment with the Garden County School System, where his career (in his words) was “always picking up”.

Rex was the youngest son of LaVere Beam and Mary Clark Beam and joined brothers Lanny and Mark in the old rock house as they grew to adulthood. Rex opted to stay with his parents through his mother’s 24 year battle with cancer and through his father’s journey in the twilight of his life. Always a nurturer, he was appreciated by every person that he had ever stopped to change a tire for, lasso a horse, or bring groceries out to their house.
He was very active in his community, serving in many capacities at the Lewellen United Methodist Church. Rex taught Sunday School classes at both the Methodist and Wesleyan churches in Lewellen and went on numerous mission trips to the Shiprock, New Mexico reservation. He served as president of the local square dance club, was Past Master of the Masons, past president of the Lewellen Lions club, and a volunteer for any activity that would promote his beloved communities of Lewellen and Oshkosh. As a trustee for his father’s south-table church, the Kowanda Historical Church, he participated in finishing the roof shingling and drove the last nail in the spire on top of the bell tower. Rex was an active participant in the Ash Hollow Pageant and the Garden County Fair as a Lion.

Rex is survived by brothers Lanny (Sheryl) of Sioux Falls & sons Lane and Dan (Jadie); Mark (Nita) of Holdrege & sons Wes (Heather) and Gabe; his aunt Neva Richter, uncle Warren Messman, and Rex’s mother’s cousin and foster uncle Bud Knoell (Clara Mae) as well as 3 great nieces, 19 cousins and a myriad of other relatives and friends.

NW Iowa Murder Trial of Nebraska Man Postponed Until September

gavel-and-scaleSIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Nebraska man charged in Iowa with killing his wife will stand trial in September.

28-year-old Rogelio Morales, of Hubbard, Nebraska, will stand trial for first-degree murder Sept. 20 in Woodbury County District Court. The trial was scheduled for March 15 but his attorney sought an extension to allow more time to investigate the case and have Morales evaluated.

Morales is accused of killing 21-year-old Margarita Morales, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, on April 19 near a Sioux City residence.

Court documents say Morales told investigators a fight broke out when his wife told him she no longer wanted to be in a relationship. He said he wrapped his hands around her neck and that his next memory was his wife not breathing.

Piglet Causes Three-Car Crash on I-80

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police say a piglet running down Interstate 80 caused a three-car crash.

The baby pig was spotted around 4:30 p.m. Friday in an eastbound lane of Interstate 80 in Lincoln. An accident report Monday shows a car stopped to avoid hitting the piglet, causing the car behind it to stop as well. This started a chain reaction of two cars being rear-ended.

The people in the three cars were not hurt and neither was the piglet.

Police do not know where the piglet was from, and the accident report did not say if the animal was caught.

City, County Departments Save Thousands with Low Fuel Prices

Several departments saw fuel savings of up to 50 percent during the first six months of this fiscal year. The savings will likely help these departments pay for other climbing costs, such as bridge and road repairs.

County departments spent $455,000 on fuel during the first six months of this fiscal year out of $1.4 million budgeted for the whole year.

During the first half of this fiscal year, the county engineering department spent $182,000 of $630,000 budgeted for diesel fuel for the entire year. The department also spent $70,000 on unleaded gasoline out of the $120,000 budgeted for the entire year.

Senator: Oversight Still Needed for ACCESS Nebraska

accessnebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The chairwoman of a committee that investigated problems with Nebraska’s public benefits service says the system has improved, but lawmakers should continue their oversight.

Sen. Sara Howard of Omaha said Monday that ACCESS Nebraska has made “notable gains” in the last year, following numerous complaints about long call-waiting times. Howard urged the Legislature’s Executive Board to advance her proposal to create an oversight committee in place of the investigative committee, saying the reforms still need to be monitored.

ACCESS Nebraska was unveiled in 2008 as a more efficient way to help low-income residents apply for and renew public benefits. The initial system reduced the number of case workers who met with residents in person and relied more on a state website and call centers.
