Lincoln – The Nebraska baseball team (4-6, 0-0 Big Ten) won its 38th straight home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field with a 8-0 shutout of the Northern Colorado Bears. Sophomore Scott Schreiber drove in a career-high four runs with two home runs and a double, while fellow sophomore Garett King tossed 6.0 scoreless innings for his first win of the year.

Schreiber’s two homers were blasted to the deepest part of the ballpark, carrying over the 403-foot sign in left-center field, and they came in consecutive at-bats. It was the first time a Husker hitter had done that since March 14, 2006 when Brandon Buckman did it against Illinois State.

With four home runs on the year, the sophomore from Menasha, Wis., now has one more home run this year in nine games then he had all of last season in 40 games.

King, who was making his third start of the year, retired the first nine Bears he faced and didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning. He allowed just two hits and one walk on the afternoon and retired the Bears in order four times on the day.

The Huskers notched 10 hits, while limiting the Bears to three. Along with Schreiber, Ryan Boldt also recorded three hits, including a leadoff stand-up triple in the fifth.

Zack Engelken and Byron Hood polished off NU’s second shutout of the season. Engelken tossed a pair of innings of relief and struck out five, while Hood made his Husker debut in the ninth and tossed a perfect inning of relief.

The Huskers and Bears wrap up their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at Hawks Field, with first pitched scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Jake Meyers is scheduled to start for the Huskers on the mound. It will be his first appearance in 2016 and his first career start.
