Percy Breaks School Record on Outdoor Opening Day

TEMPE, Ariz. – On the first day of the outdoor season for Nebraska track and field, sophomore Nick Percy smashed the hammer throw school record to lead the Huskers at the Arizona State Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium.

Percy, who entered the day ranked No. 2 in school history in the event, threw 221-8 (67.56m) on his first attempt to win the competition. Percy topped his previous personal best by 14 feet and beat Will Lohman’s school record of 216-2 (65.89m), set last year. Percy’s throw puts him at No. 7 in the NCAA so far this season.

The Husker women had a strong night in the javelin, as Sarah Firestone captured the title with a mark of 170-6 (51.98m). Freshman Brittni Wolczyk was third with a throw of 155-10 (47.51), and transfer Danie Plank was fourth with a throw of 152-0 (46.32m). Maddie Osmundson was sixth (142-3, 43.36m).

With three events scored, the Husker women have 26 points and are in first place in the eight-team meet, while the Husker men have 18 points and are in fourth place.

Newcomer Seth Derr led the Husker men in the javelin, finishing fourth with a throw of 208-9 (63.62m). James Nizich was sixth with a mark of 200-2 (61.02m).

In the women’s hammer throw, Tristen Sharp was seventh at 173-9 (52.96m) and Alice Akers was eighth at 173-6 (52.90m).

Bonnie Smith placed eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:54.99, an outdoor personal best. Megan Lush ran 18:11.81 to finish 10th.

The meet continues on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
