Midland University Drops Plan for Former Dana Campus

midland-universityBLAIR, Neb. (AP) — Midland University has dropped plans to reopen the former Dana College campus in Blair.

The university announced Friday that it will focus on improvements in its Fremont campus and on finding a permanent home for MBA, other graduate and nontraditional programs in Omaha.

In June 2013 Midland announced that it was raising money to use on the Dana campus. The 126-year-old Lutheran college closed in 2010, and many of its students transferred to Midland University in Fremont, about 20 miles away.

Midland officials say the Dana campus required a significant amount of money to maintain an aging physical plant and a challenging path to acquire accreditation. The officials concluded that the costs of reopening Dana were prohibitive compared to other growth options.

Religious Exemption for Child Welfare Services Advances

gaymarriageLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A legislative committee has advanced a bill that would prevent the state from punishing faith-based child placement groups in Nebraska that refuse to work with same-sex foster parents.

The bill advanced on a 5-3 vote Friday after a heated debate among committee members. Two senators stormed out of the room immediately after the vote, and Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha says he intends to mount a filibuster to try to block the measure.

Sen. Mark Kolterman of Seward has said he introduced the bill to ensure Nebraska keeps a strong network of child placement agencies, some of which are religious and object to same-sex marriage.

Opponents say the sweeping religious exemption would allow discrimination in the state’s foster care system.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has affirmed the conviction of a Guide Rock man who joined his mother in killing her boyfriend’s 68-year-old mother in 2013.

Andrew Casterline was found guilty in December 2014 of first-degree murder, burglary and a weapons crime in the October 2013 slaying of Virginia Barone. His mother, Shelley Casterline, also was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Andrew Casterline argued in his appeal that the evidence was insufficient to convict him and that a district judge erred in allowing some evidence and in using certain language in jury instructions.

The high court disagreed with his assertions in its ruling issued Friday.

His mother lost her own appeal to the Supreme Court last May.

Omaha High School Could See Cuts in Substitute Teachers

highschoolOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha school district is considering cutting down on use of substitute teachers for high school juniors and seniors as it struggles to close a $5.4 million budget gap.

Westside High School estimates that it could save $75,000 next year if fewer substitute teachers were hired.

The plan would give teachers discretion to decide if their students need a substitute teacher of can work independently. Officials say the high school already encourages such student responsibility and time management through its schedule that’s similar to college.

Westside borrowed the idea from Minnesota high schools, but it hasn’t been tested in the metro area. Some local officials express skepticism that it’ll catch on.

A list of 30 other potential cuts could affect bus routes, summer camps and teaching staff.

Man, Child Rescued from Closed Water Park in Columbus

columbus-policeCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A man and a child have been rescued from a slide at a closed water park in Columbus.

The child crawled under a fence Thursday at Pawnee Plunge Water Park and the man climbed over the fence in pursuit. Columbus police officer Buddy Maschmeier says the child climbed stairs of a slide but the man followed and managed to reach the child before the child could drop out the exit into an empty pool.

The man tried to get out of the slide but injured an ankle in the attempt. He climbed back up the stairs and slid down to the child to await rescue. Their names have not been released.

Police and firefighters soon arrived to help the pair reach safety.

Lincoln Elementary, Cody and Jefferson Elementary and Maxwell children may be qualified for free tutoring hours.

This school year North Platte Public Schools received a grant from the Nebraska Department of Education for the Supplemental Education Services or SES.  Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, students who qualify for free and reduced lunches attending one of these Title One Schools, were eligible to receive the SES grant dollars.

The program will allow approximately 200 children in Cody, Lincoln, Jefferson and Maxwell 19 hours of free tutoring for each child that qualifies.

The term “supplemental educational services” refers to free extra academic help, such as tutoring or remedial help, that is provided to students in subjects such as reading, language arts, and math.

Sylvan Learning in North Platte is the only local business to partner with North Platte Public Schools and to offer the education services to students.

“This will allow students to improve their learning, testing and in the end, improve schools overall scores,” said Sylvan owner Debra Smith.

But, time is running out for families to take advantage of these free tutoring services because they must be used by the end of July.

“We’d hate to know that families are unaware of the program and the hours go unused because it’s really about helping children improve their education and scores. Especially for those who may not otherwise be able to attain outside tutoring, and the best part is that it’s free to families who qualify,” Smith says.

Tutoring hours are based on each child’s learning level and schedule.

SES Forms are available at Sylvan Learning or McKinley Education Center.
