LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A property tax measure designed to benefit Nebraska’s farm and ranch landowners has advanced to a final vote in the Legislature.

Lawmakers gave the bill second-round approval on Thursday after less than an hour of debate. The vote followed two days of filibusters led mostly by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha.

Chambers ended his prolonged comments and allowed the measure to advance. He says he met with Speaker of the Legislature Galen Hadley on Thursday morning after a contentious exchange the night before, but would not disclose what they discussed.

The bill by Sen. Mike Gloor of Grand Island would provide an additional $20 million for tax credits to offset local property taxes on agricultural land. It’s one of Gov. Pete Ricketts’ top priorities.
