Ex-Omaha Teacher Sentenced in Sex-with-Student Case

Bryan Black

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former English teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old Omaha student has been sentenced to prison.

A judge Wednesday sentenced 37-year-old Bryan Black to 32 to 60 years in prison.

Black pleaded no contest in January to attempted sexual assault of a child and visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct.

Prosecutors say Black began a relationship with a Millard North High School student in September 2014. The girl made her allegations in March 2015, a day before Black was arrested.

Black apologized in court Wednesday. His attorney asked for the minimum sentence of three years in prison, noting that Black was previously a military police officer who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

800-Yard-Long Drug Tunnel Found Between Mexico and San Diego

dept.-of-justiceSAN DIEGO (AP) — Federal officials in San Diego say they have discovered an 800-yard-long secret tunnel under the U.S.-Mexico border, resulting in the seizure of more than a ton of cocaine and seven tons of marijuana.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that the tunnel extends from a house in Tijuana, Mexico, to a fenced lot in a San Diego industrial area.

The tunnel was equipped with a rail system, ventilation, lights and a large elevator.

The tunnel exit on the U.S. side is about 3 feet wide and was covered by a trash bin. About 500 yards of the tunnel are on the U.S. side of the border.

Officials say six people were arrested in San Diego on Friday and charged with crimes involving drugs and construction of the tunnel.

Authorities Say Man Had Heart Problem Before Lincoln Fire

fireLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An autopsy shows a Lincoln man had a heart problem before a fire broke out at his home.

The body of 71-year-old Gary Tunnison was found on March 16 inside a garage that had been converted into a living space.

The Lancaster County attorney’s office says the cause of Tunnison’s death was consistent with heart disease and that Tunnison had a heart episode before the fire.

Obama Raises 2011 Flood Recovery Funding for Omaha Tribe

omaha-tribe-of-nebraskaMACY, Neb. (AP) — The White House says the Obama administration has raised the federal share of public aid for the Omaha Tribe’s recovery from the 2011 Missouri River flooding.

A news release sent Wednesday says the level has been raised to 90 percent of the total eligible costs from 75 percent. It’s unclear why the aid was increased. A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman said he couldn’t immediately reply. A tribal representative didn’t immediately return a message.

Hundreds of thousands of acres of land were flooded along the Missouri River in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri in 2011 after heavy spring rains and a giant mountain snowpack forced massive releases from upstream dams.

The Omaha Indian Reservation lies primarily in northeast Nebraska but extends across the Missouri River into Monona County, Iowa.
