93-Year-Old Omaha Baker, World War II Veteran Receives Medals
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 93-year-old baker in Omaha can now wear the medals he earned during combat missions in World War II.
Maj. Gen. Daryl Bohac pinned an Air Medal with silver and bronze oak leaf clusters and five other awards on Claudio Orsi’s jacket Wednesday in Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Ashford’s office.
Orsi’s father was a World War I veteran who opened Orsi’s Italian Bakery & Pizzeria in Omaha’s Little Italy in 1919. Orsi was married with a newborn son and working at the bakery when the Army drafted him in December 1942. Orsi joined a 10-man B-24 bomber crew.
Orsi has received the six medals after more than 70 years since the last of his 43 combat missions in the Pacific.
Western Nebraska Attorney Disbarred for Lying, False Filings
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska attorney accused of lying to clients about filing court documents and providing them with false court filings has been disbarred.
The Nebraska Supreme Court ordered the disbarment of Joseph Kishiyama on Friday after he voluntarily surrendered his law license last month.
Kishiyama, who was admitted to the Nebraska bar in 2008, surrendered his license after the Scottsbluff law firm at which he had worked sent a grievance letter in October outlining the complaints against Kishiyama to the Nebraska Counsel for Discipline. The letter said Kishiyama had violated several of the Nebraska rules of professional conduct.
On Friday, the state’s high court found that Kishiyama freely, knowingly and voluntarily declined to contest the allegations against him.
Nebraska Supreme Court Reinstates Man’s DUI Conviction
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has reinstated a man’s drunken driving conviction, reversing last year’s Nebraska Court of Appeals ruling that found his constitutional rights had been violated.
The state’s high court on Friday found that a Wisner police officer was not wrong to stop 27-year-old Adam Woldt to gather information about someone else’s possible criminal activity, then used the stop to arrest Woldt for DUI.
Woldt had argued that because the officer had no suspicion that Woldt had committed a crime when he was stopped, his constitutional right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure had been violated.
But the high court said the officer’s stop of Woldt was not unreasonable and that the officer’s interest in protecting public safety outweighed his interference with Woldt’s individual liberty.
Nebraska FFA is Symbol of Hope Amid Agricultural Woes
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Although the agricultural economy is often hurting, youthful optimism remains among Nebraska’s FFA.
Organizers of the annual FFA Convention predict a record-breaking attendance of 4,600 students, plus teachers and other guests for a total future farmers crop of more than 6,500 people.
The FFA’s state director of agricultural education, Matt Kreifels, says people are catching up with the reality that agriculture is a dominating industry in Nebraska and what it does for the state economically.
This includes the realization that the FFA isn’t just for students who want to farm, but also for young people interested in bio-energy, business management, engineering, science and other disciplines.
The state organization’s total membership has currently peaked at more than 13,000 students.

Charges Dismissed in Lincoln Woman’s Shooting Case

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Threats and weapons charges filed against a Lincoln woman have been dismissed.
Online court records say a judge approved the prosecution motion Monday in the case against 23-year-old Elyssia Ochoa.
Lincoln police say Ochoa had driven to a friend’s apartment July 10 after her friend reported that she and her husband had been arguing. Police say Ochoa fired one rifle shot toward the man and a neighbor, hitting a sidewalk. She was arrested several days later.
Prosecutors asked for the charges to be dismissed because they couldn’t find the man and the neighbor or other witnesses.
