Fire that destroyed Lincoln grocery store ruled an accident

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Fire officials say a fire that destroyed a longtime grocery store near downtown Lincoln has been ruled an accident.

Firetrucks were dispatched a little before 2:15 a.m. Thursday to Ideal Grocery on South 27th Street. Investigators say flames reached upward of 30 feet and some were still visible 2½ hours after the first alarm.

After getting the fire under control, firefighters remained on the scene for several additional hours to pour water on hot spots.

Officials say they believe the fire started in the store’s compressor room where Freon was pumped into coolers.

A portion of the store’s roof collapsed but no injuries were reported.

The store opened in 1920. Battalion Chief Jeremy Gegg told the Lincoln Journal Star that the building is a total loss.

Officers sent around 4:45 a.m. Thursday to investigate a shooting in northeast Omaha found Kelley. Police say he was taken to Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.

No arrests have been reported.

Ricketts, agricultural groups tout trade deal for Nebraska

Gov. Pete Ricketts
Gov. Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and the state’s leading agricultural groups are touting the benefits of a major trade deal proposed between the United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations.

The coalition released an analysis on Thursday showing that the Trans-Pacific Partnership would increase Nebraska’s total cash receipts by more than $378 million annually from the sale of agricultural products.

The analysis says Cuming, Custer, Platte, Dawson and Lincoln counties would see the biggest economic benefits, but every county would see gains.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau, Nebraska Cattlemen, Nebraska Pork Producers Association, Nebraska Corn Born and the Nebraska Soybean Association are all calling on Congress to ratify the agreement.

Ricketts says lowering tariffs through the agreement would help Nebraska expand its trade relationship with Japan, one of the state’s biggest partners.

Robert passed away in 2000 then Florence moved to North Platte in 2014 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jeff.

When she was younger, Florence loved to roller skate. While living in Arizona, she was an avid crafter, enjoyed sewing for others and belonged to a silk flower club. Florence loved working with her hands and was a kind and patient lady.

Frances Mae “Pat” Colvin

Frances Mae “Pat” Colvin, age 96, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at her home in North Platte, NE.

Pat was born May 12, 1920, to James Raymond and Elsie Pearl Watts Arnett in North Platte. She grew up in the Platte Valley, graduating from Platte Valley High School. Right after graduation, Pat moved to Denver, CO to attend Parks Business College. After graduating, she lived with a group of friends, and worked as a bookkeeper for several companies. She was a very independent woman for her time.

Always strong, sharp, and thoughtful, Pat fondly remembered her time working for the railroad in Denver. It was there she met her husband, Raymond Edward Colvin. After two dates, they were married, then Ray was sent overseas to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Following Ray’s discharge, they moved to North Platte in 1949. Here, she enjoyed volunteering for many organizations and belonged to the Platte Valley Women’s Club and Platte Valley and Nichols Extension Club. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Pat was an avid traveler, visiting 49 states, Ireland, Australia, and the Caribbean. But it was at home where her grandkids would hear the jingle of wind chimes on her “magic” freezer, meaning Grandma’s goodies were on their way. Pat was a proud supporter of her grandkids’ academics and sports, always attending sporting events to watch her kids and grandkids. She also loved watching the Huskers, especially volleyball.

Pat read the newspaper front to back every day, and could fill in a crossword puzzle like no one’s business. She will live on in the loving memories of her family, for it was her family that Pat put above all else. We’re very thankful to have enjoyed so many good years with her.

She is survived by her children, Kay DeBell, of Broomfield, CO, Tom (Becky) Colvin, of Salt Lake City, UT, Don (Marcia) Colvin, of North Platte, Dick (Linda) Colvin, of St. George, UT, and Karen Todd, of Alliance, NE; grandchildren, Dan (Angela) DeBell, Joe (Renee) DeBell, Erin DiFulvio, Sean Colvin, Erin Colvin, Talia DiFulvio, Hailey Colvin, Rebecca (Jeremy) Murphy, Laura (Bryce) Bornemeier, David (Sarah) Colvin, Melissa (Ward) Prickett, Sarah (Mike) Wittry, Andrea Todd and Michael (fiancée Kay) Todd; and great-grandchildren, Evan, Haley, Colton, Parker, Ryan, Jacob, Sam, Hannah, Grant, Owen, Emerson, and Jackson; sister, Mildred McTiernan, of Denver, CO; sister-in-law, Betty Arnett, of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

Pat was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ray; her parents, Ray and Elsie Arnett; son-in-law, Jim DeBell; brother, Charles Arnett; brothers-in-law, Jim McTiernan and Baxter, Bob, and Jim Colvin; and sister-in-law, Ruth Colvin Jesse.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2016, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating.

In keeping with Pat’s wishes, the casket will be closed. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or prior to the service at the church. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the First United Methodist Church, Hershey Education Foundation, Alliance TeamMates or Great Plains Hospice.

Former death row inmate dies at Nebraska State Penitentiary

Randolph Reeves (NE DOC Photo)

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who spent 20 years on Nebraska’s death row for killing two women has died in prison.

A corrections spokesman says 60-year-old Randolph Reeves died at the Nebraska State Penitentiary just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Spokesman Andrew Nystrom says Reeves is believed to have died of natural causes.

Reeves was sentenced to death in 1981 for the murders of 30-year-old Janet Mesner and 28-year-old Victoria Lamm in Lincoln the previous year.

He came within 40 hours of being executed in 1999 before the state Supreme Court withdrew his death warrant to hear a last-minute appeal. Reeves was resentenced to life in prison without parole in 2001 after justices ruled that three-judge panels must be unanimous when imposing a death sentence.

A grand jury will investigate Reeves’ death.

Man accused of stealing machine to clear snow in Scottsbluff OKs plea deal

ne-supreme-court-gavelGERING, Neb. (AP) — A man accused of stealing a front end loader to clear snow from private parking lots in Scottsbluff has made a plea deal with prosecutors.

The agreement signed Wednesday by 45-year-old Jody Jackson said he would plead to a felony count of criminal mischief. Prosecutors agreed to drop theft and related charges in return. The agreement says prosecutors will recommend three years of probation but also says the district court judge isn’t bound by the recommendation.

Prosecutors say Jackson is a former BNSF employee who took the loader from the Scottsbluff depot on Dec. 15. He told authorities he just wanted to do some good for the community. Police say there was damage to one of the lots and say damage to the loader was noted after Jackson returned it.

Omaha suburb of Bellevue is Nebraska’s fastest-growing city

city-of-bellevueBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — Census figures show that the Omaha suburb of Bellevue is Nebraska’s fastest-growing city.

New U.S. Census data shows that Bellevue added 738 residents to have 55,510 residents by July 1 2015. That made Bellevue the 249th fastest growing city nationwide out of cities with at least 50,000 people.

Lincoln was just behind Bellevue and ranked 264 on the national list. The state’s capital gained 3,443 people to have 277,348 residents.

Both Bellevue and Lincoln had a roughly 1.3 percent growth rate.

Grand Island gained 188 residents to have a population of 51,440 and rank 501st.

The state’s largest city of Omaha grew 1,569 to have 443,885 residents and rank 510th nationally.

Omaha and Grand Island both grew about 0.4 percent between 2014 and 2015.
