Inflated tax valuations eventually got unintended attention

taxesGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — An effort to get some new Grand Island businesses to file overdue personal property schedules has backfired.

Hall County assessor Jan Pelland told the Hall County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that she asked her staff to prepare the schedules for the businesses, supply inflated values and then send them to the businesses with directions to correct the values and send the schedules back.

Six of the businesses didn’t notice the valuations — and Pelland says she didn’t check — so the values were reflected on tax bills sent out in December. That’s when they noticed.

Pelland took full responsibility for the office action, and the board voted 7-0 Tuesday to reduce those inflated personal property values by nearly $5.3 million.

Whiteclay hosting conference on fetal alcohol syndrome

whiteclay-neLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Advocates are hosting a conference on fetal alcohol syndrome in Whiteclay, a tiny Nebraska village known for selling large quantities of beer near a South Dakota Indian reservation that bans alcohol.

The conference on Thursday and Friday is part of a broader effort to address alcoholism on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Speakers include experts on fetal alcohol syndrome, sexual and domestic violence and a teacher who has worked on the reservation. Native American Activist Frank LaMere of South Sioux City is also scheduled to speak, as is Whiteclay documentary filmmaker and former Oklahoma assistant attorney general John Maisch.

Whiteclay’s four beer stores sold the equivalent of 3.5 million cans of beer last year in a town with about a dozen full-time residents.

Fiat Chrysler recalls 500,000 Jeeps; air bags may not work

jeep logoDETROIT (AP) — Fiat Chrysler is recalling about a half-million Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide because the driver’s air bag may not inflate in a crash.

The recall covers Wranglers from the 2007 through 2010 model years, including 392,000 in the U.S.

Another 7,400 2011-2016 Wranglers in the U.S. with right-hand-drive also are affected.

The company says excessive exposure to dust and dirt from off-road driving can cause electrical problems in the steering column air bag wiring. If that happens, a warning lamp will come on and owners should contact their dealer.

Fiat Chrysler says it’s not aware of any related injuries. The problem was discovered by a company investigation.

Dealers will install a new steering wheel back cover and steering column shroud. The company says it will notify customers when parts are available.

Nebraska high court won’t let lawyer return to slayings case

Anthony Garcia
Anthony Garcia

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has refused to reinstate an attorney for a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to an Omaha medical school.

On Wednesday, the court rejected an appeal by Anthony Garcia’s attorneys to let Allison Motta rejoin his defense team. A Douglas County judge removed Motta from the case after she made public comments about DNA evidence days before Garcia’s trial was to begin. The judge says the comments violated ethical rules and could have swayed a jury.

Garcia has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors say he was motivated by revenge over professional grudges, including his being fired from Creighton University’s pathology department.

Earlier this month Garcia told the judge in a letter that he didn’t want Motta reinstated.

NP woman accused of swinging at husband, cutting him while holding child

Heather Granados
Heather Granados

A North Platte woman is facing a felony assault and child abuse charge after she allegedly assaulted her husband.

According to Investigator John Deal, officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of North Pacific Street at around 11:46 a.m., on May 17 .

Officers met with 31-year-old Heather Granados, her 27-year-old husband, and several independent witnesses.

Officers learned that Granados and her husband were allegedly not getting along, and Granados took their two children outside of an apartment where they were staying.

According to Deal, the husband believed that Granados was under the influence drugs, and went outside to retrieve the children.

As the man approached Granados, she allegedly began swinging at him, then grabbed a box cutter that was in his pocket and cut him on the arm with it, all while she was holding a one of the children.

Police say the victim had a cut that corroborated his story, and a box cutter was located near Granados.  They say she fought and resisted officers as they attempted to detain her.

In the end, Granados was placed under arrest and charged with felony 2nd-degree domestic assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, felony child abuse, and resisting arrest.

Granados was taken to Great Plains Health for medical clearance before being jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The children, who were uninjured, were placed in temporary state custody.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The son of the Rev. Billy Graham is urging Nebraska Christians to run for public office and support candidates who follow biblical principles.

Franklin Graham spoke to a crowd of thousands Wednesday on the Capitol’s front steps, including Lt. Gov. Mike Foley and numerous state senators.

Nebraska was the 24th stop on the Decision America Tour, a series of prayer rallies scheduled in all 50 states.

Franklin Graham says Christian voters should participate in this year’s election even if they have to vote for “the lesser of two evils,” and should look closely at local races. He says Christians need to insert God back into politics and fight against secularism in all levels of government.
