New scam-tracking map allows Nebraskans to report and monitor fraud schemes
AARP Nebraska today announced that the AARP Fraud Watch Network has launched an online Scam-Tracking Map, allowing Nebraska consumers to report instances of fraud and share the information with others in their community who may become targeted. The free interactive tool also includes alerts from law enforcement and other public agencies.
The AARP Fraud Watch Network is encouraging those who have been targeted or victimized by a scam to visit the map web page powered by Google Maps, where they can easily post a brief description of the scam. The scam-tracking map, www.aarp.org/fraudmap, allows users with one click to view current scam alerts posted by residents of their own community.
Users also may search for different types of scams via a keyword search. A pull-down menu displays the latest police and public safety notices, state by state. In 2015 Nebraska residents registered 7,648 complaints about identity theft with the Federal Trade Commission.
“Scammers have shown that they are highly adept at developing creative identity theft schemes, imposter scams and other types of fraud,” said Devorah Lanner, communications director for AARP Nebraska. “The scam-tracking map is another tool to help Nebraskans recognize and combat fraud – whether it happens online and by email, telephone or a knock at your door.”
The AARP Fraud Watch Network was launched in 2014 as a free resource for people of all ages. The website, www.aarp.org/FraudWatchNetwork

Ex-Lincoln teacher pleads no contest to drunk driving charge

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Lincoln high school math teacher has pleaded no contest to driving drunk for the third time.
42-year-old Terry Harms, of Cortland, entered the plea Tuesday. The charge stemmed from a December traffic stop, during which Lincoln police smelled alcohol on Harms.
Police say his blood alcohol level registered at 0.165 percent — more than twice the legal limit to drive in Nebraska.
Court records show Harms was convicted of drunken driving in 2007 and 2011.
He worked as a substitute teacher for Lincoln Public Schools and as a part-time teacher at Lincoln North Star. School district officials say Harms has resigned.
He will be sentenced July 1.
Nebraska uninsured rate drops for adults younger than 65
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new federal report says Nebraska’s uninsured rate for adults younger than 65 declined over a two-year period.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released survey results Tuesday showing the rate was 16.1 percent last year. The rate was 18.5 percent in 2013.
The percentage of residents using public health plans declined during that period, from 11.9 percent to 8.2 percent. The percentage relying on private coverage increased from 72.1 percent to 76.7 percent.
The report says the rate for Nebraska residents of all ages was 11.7 percent. The national uninsured rate was 9.1 percent, and federal officials say it’s the first time in the nation’s history when the national rate fell below 10 percent.
Omaha board OKs textbooks for new sex education curriculum
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha school board has approved the purchase of textbooks and other materials that will be distributed for health and sex education classes starting this fall.
The board voted 7-0 Monday night for the purchases recommended by staff, after several people urged the board to wait and take more time to review the material.
In January, the board approved new standards for health and sex education. Parents and community members debated some of the curriculum’s new topics, including gender identity, sexual orientation, abortion and emergency contraception.
Lincoln man suspected of killing 2 women before killing self
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man whose body was found in a Lincoln house is suspected of shooting the two women whose bodies also were found there.
Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister said Tuesday that investigators think 50-year-old Ronald Heritage shot 53-year-old Tina Jensen and 55-year-old Norma Voges several times before killing himself. Relatives of Jensen found two of the bodies Sunday afternoon and called police.
Police have said Heritage and Jensen had been in a relationship and that it appears there’d been a disturbance before or when Voges arrived to help Jensen move some items out of Heritage’s home, where Jensen had been living. All three worked for the U.S. Postal Service.
A firearm has been recovered.
Fine proposed for excavator blamed in Omaha explosion, fire
OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — Safety regulators have proposed fining a Minnesota excavation company that was drilling in Omaha’s Old Market area when a natural gas-fueled fire destroyed a building.
Regulators say a crew struck a gas line underneath the sidewalk in front of M’s Pub on Jan. 9. Gas leaked into the basement of the building and exploded. An M’s Pub employee was taken to a hospital with cuts and a firefighter was treated after slipping on ice.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Monday that North Central Service, of Bemidji, Minnesota, didn’t use “safe and acceptable” means to find underground utilities in the area. OSHA is proposing a $4,900 fine.
A company spokesman didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press.
