2 tornadoes reported in southern Nebraska Panhandle

BROWNSON, Neb. (AP) — Two tornadoes have been spotted on the ground in the southern Panhandle of Nebraska.

The National Weather Service says trained spotters and Cheyenne County officials reported the tornadoes between 2 and 2:20 p.m. Monday, about two miles south of Brownson.

No injuries have been reported, but one building was damaged.

The two initially have been classified as landspout tornadoes, which experts say usually are weaker and smaller than twisters that are associated with thunderstorm rotation.

South Dakota teen died in Nebraska crash, patrol says

state-patrol-logoMERRIMAN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 15-year-old South Dakota resident has been killed in a Nebraska crash.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. Sunday on Nebraska Highway 61, just north of Merriman. The Nebraska State Patrol says a southbound pickup ran off the roadway and rolled into a ditch, landing on its roof.

The conditions of the driver and another passenger have not been reported. The patrol identified the 15-year-old as Sydney Lindbloom, of Pierre, South Dakota.

Onlookers help people out of Elkhorn River after canoe flips

elkhorn-riverWATERLOO, Neb. (AP) — Onlookers helped a mom and dad and their 9-year-old son escape from the Elkhorn River after their canoe flipped over.

Brandon Monroe and Gary Burns jumped into the water Monday evening after they saw the three tossed into the river near Waterloo.

Monroe says he went after the boy and told his dad to get to the bank quickly. Monroe says an airboat was able to reach the boy’s mother and help her to safety.

North Platte Senior First Nationals continue hot start

np first nationalsIt was another perfect weekend for the North Platte First Nationals Senior Legion baseball team. Saturday was the home opener for the First Nationals hosting Columbus at Bill Wood Field. In game one, North Platte won 6-1 and followed up with a 13-3 win in six innings in game two over Columbus. Sunday’s doubleheader against Norfolk at Bill Wood Field began with a 6-0 win for North Platte in game one and once again the First Nationals dominated the second game of the doubleheader, ending it by run rule with a 13-3 victory after four innings. Both series were Cornhusker League games and improves the First Nationals Senior Legion to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Cornhusker League.

The Junior Legion suffered their first setback of the season in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Columbus with a 10-2 loss. The Juniors bounced back with a 10-2 win in game two. On Sunday, the North Platte Junior Legion scored 14 runs in the first inning of game one at Norfolk. North Platte eventually won 17-0 in game one and won game two 15-7 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Monday night’s games at Bill Wood Field were postponed due to the weather. The North Platte Juniors were leading Lexington 12-6 in the fourth inning when the games were called for the night. On Tuesday, May 31, both the Junior and Senior Legion will be at home to host Kearney in Cornhusker League games at Bill Wood Field. The Juniors game is scheduled for 5 pm and the Seniors game will follow around 7:30 pm.

 

Huskers Headed to Clemson Regional

Lincoln – For the second time in three years the Nebraska baseball team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Huskers, who are 37-20 on the year, earned an at-large invitation during the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Selection Show Monday morning on ESPNU and will play in the Clemson Regional.

Nebraska is the #3 seed and will play #2 seed Oklahoma State on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) on ESPNU.

The Clemson Tigers are the #1 seed and will face #4 seed Western Carolina at 6 p.m. (CT) on ESPN3.

Nebraska will be making its 14th NCAA Regional appearance.

Motorcyclist fatally injured in suburban Omaha collision

fatal-motorcycle-crashLA VISTA, Neb. (AP) — A 25-year-old motorcyclist has been fatally injured in a suburban Omaha collision.

The accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Sunday on the west side of La Vista. La Vista police say the eastbound motorcycle collided with a westbound car that was turning left in front of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead later at an Omaha hospital. Police identified him as Jeremy Liford, of Omaha. The car driver was not injured. He was identified as 36-year-old Joshua Spencer.

The collision is being investigated.

‘Super two’ highways considered for stretching road budgets

NDORLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Road planners are considering “super two” highways as ways to stretch Nebraska’s highway dollars.

The two-lane highways have wider shoulders and an extra passing lane every five miles or so.

Nebraska Roads Department engineers say the design could increase traffic flow at less than half the price of a new four-lane highway.

The department hasn’t yet announced where super twos might be used. State officials have encouraged communities to consider super twos as alternatives for lower-priority projects.

McCook hangar project expected to be finished this year

McCook-AirportMCCOOK, Neb. (AP) — Officials expect a hangar project will be finished this year at McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport.

Airport officials say the new, six-bay hangar will help reduce a waiting list of about 10 aircraft owners interested in hangar space.

The city will be responsible for about 10 percent of the project cost, with the federal government picking up the remainder. The final cost could hit $640,000.

ConAgra titan Mike Harper dies in Omaha; he was 88

conagra_foodsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mike Harper, who is credited with transforming ConAgra from a struggling grain company into a giant food conglomerate, has died in Omaha.

John A. Gentleman Mortuaries said Monday that Harper died Saturday at the age of 88. His daughter Elizabeth Murphy friends had visited her father during his final weeks and that he died peacefully at home.

In addition to his ConAgra work from 1974 through 1992, Harper also helped create the downtown Omaha renaissance by constructing ConAgra’s headquarters campus along the Missouri River and in Nebraska’s economic growth through his insistence the state adopt tax incentives.

Gov. Pete Ricketts said Sunday that Harper “was charming, hard-nosed, generous, and a great role model for any aspiring business executive.”
