NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A woman accused of child abuse in the death of her 4-year-old daughter wants her trial moved out of Madison County.
Lawyers for 21-year-old Carla Montoya last week filed a request for a change of venue. The motion said extensive coverage of the case and online comments by potential jurors would prevent Montoya from having a fair trial in Madison County.
Her trial is scheduled to begin July 11. She’s pleaded not guilty to a charge of intentional child abuse.
Court documents say Montoya told Norfolk investigators that she had tossed her daughter Caylee into her bed three times on March 12. Montoya said she thought her daughter may have hit her head on the bed frame or a wall.
