Ex-Disney employee accused of stealing from cash register

disney-worldORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a former part-time Disney employee is accused of taking more than $112,000 from cash registers while working as a hostess at a Magic Kingdom restaurant.

Jail records say 29-year-old Katie Marie Miller was booked into the Orange County Jail on Tuesday on charges of grand theft, scheme to defraud and making false statements. She remained in jail Thursday and is being held on a $61,100 bond.

Miller told investigators she started taking the money to help pay bills and it then became an addiction. She said she didn’t realize how much she’d taken until Disney’s financial analysts confronted her.

Prosecutors issued a warrant for her arrest two months ago. She was arrested last month in Hopedale, Massachusetts, and brought to Orlando on Tuesday.

Tree-killing pest confirmed in Omaha, first case in Nebraska

ash-borerOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — State officials say an invasive insect that kills ash trees has been confirmed for the first time in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture says Wednesday the beetle was found in a Pulaski Park tree in Omaha. With Nebraska added to the list, there are now 27 states where the pest has been confirmed since 2002.

Department Director Greg Ibach says the beetle’s presence in the state is not a surprise considering nearby states that already have infestations, including Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas.

The insects are native to Asia and were first spotted in the U.S. in 2002, when they showed up in the Detroit area. Once infected, trees typically die within five years, though healthy trees can be treated to resist the bug.

Lincoln man accused of exploiting ailing father-in-law

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been accused of financially exploiting his 85-year-old father-in-law.

53-year-old Melando James was arrested Tuesday and has since been released on bond. He’s charged with abuse of vulnerable adult and theft.

A public phone listing for James couldn’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment on James’ behalf.

An arrest affidavit says police began investigating James in September after receiving information that he may have been transferring to his account money from his father-in-law’s account. The total is more than $8,500. The older man has been in a long-term nursing facility since September.

The court documents say James denied knowing his father-in-law has mental issues.

New Hilton hotel coming to North Platte

tru-by-hiltonA new 90 guest room, four-story, Tru by Hilton Hotel will be built on Halligan Drive, just south of the Iron Eagle Golf Course.

Tru by Hilton is Hilton’s newest brand, which was just announced January of 2016.  The brand already has over 200 hotels in the development pipeline.  Hilton says the Tru brand will become its largest brand yet, overtaking Hampton Inn, which operates over 2,000 hotels.

The Tru brand is designed to serve the largest segment of the hotel market, the midscale category, which covers about 40 percent of all hotel stays in North America.

This new brand will feature a technology-forward mentality, featuring segment leading complimentary Wi-Fi, mobile check-in, room selection and a Digital Key through Hilton HHonors.  Tru will also partner with DirecTV to offer guests more than 150 channels displayed on 55-inch televisions.

The hotel will create about 25 new jobs, offering their existing employees career advancement opportunities.  The Keenan, who will operate the hotel, own and operate the Hampton Inn and Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites, both in North Platte.

Site work on the hotel is expected to begin in late summer, with full construction beginning in the Spring of 2017.  It is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2018.

Western Nebraska flooding hinges on snowmelt, official says

flood-area-featureHOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s largest reservoir could be full by Sunday, but officials aren’t yet sure whether that portends downstream flooding as any overflow is released.

As of Wednesday morning, Lake McConaughy (muh-KAHN’-uh-hay) on the North Platte River was 97.9 percent full, with inflows higher than releases. Upstream in Wyoming, reservoir water was pouring over the spillway at Pathfinder Dam. Upstream of that, the Seminoe Reservoir was 87.1 percent full.

Melting of higher-than-normal snowpacks in the North Platte and South Platte basins is just starting. The rivers merge east of North Platte to form the Platte River.

Civil engineer Cory Steinke told the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District board Monday that any flooding downstream from North Platte depends on how the snow melts.

Wounded Deuel County deputy asks to regain health insurance

deuel-county-sheriffCHAPPELL, Neb. (AP) — A Deuel County sheriff’s deputy who was shot four times while helping serve arrest warrants is fighting to regain his county-provided health insurance.

Hutchinson was injured Dec. 3, while trying to arrest a suspect in Big Springs. Authorities said the suspect came out of his home and shot Hutchinson.

County commissioners took no action Tuesday on a request from Deputy Mike Hutchinson for the county to pay for his health insurance while he continues to recover from his injuries. Hutchinson was dropped from the county’s group plan May 31.

According to the Nebraska Association of County Officials, which provides the county’s group health plan, Hutchinson’s “reduction in hours of employment” triggered the termination of his coverage.

Commissioners are set to consider the issue June 21.

2nd trial begins in exonerated Nebraska inmates’ lawsuit

lawsuit-settlementLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The second trial has begun in the lawsuit filed against Gage County by people wrongfully convicted in a 1985 rape and slaying.

In his opening statement Tuesday in a federal courtroom in Lincoln, defense attorney Jeff Patterson told jurors that “we’re here to right the wrong of the worst miscarriage of justice in Nebraska history.”

The six people — James Dean, Kathleen Gonzalez, Debra Shelden, Ada JoAnn Taylor, Thomas Winslow and Joseph White — were wrongly convicted in the killing of Helen Wilson in Beatrice and served a combined 77 years in prison before DNA testing cleared them in 2008.

The first trial last year ended in a mistrial.

Known as the Beatrice Six, they’ve argued that Gage County investigators labored to close the case despite contradictory evidence.

Antelope County supervisors OK 160-turbine wind farm

windmillNELIGH, Neb. (AP) — Another wind farm has been approved for Antelope County, over objections from some residents.

The county Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to let a Chicago-based company erect 160 turbines near Neligh (NEE’-lee). The company, Invenergy, already operates a wind farm in the Elgin area.

The supervisors imposed several conditions on the project, such as increased setback distances and completion of a noise analysis within 24 months after the structures are erected. Eight turbines in the original proposal were dropped because of potential conflict with flight space around the Neligh airport.

Opponents have cited concerns about noise and sought tighter restrictions on setback distances. People who favored the wind farm have said it could increase jobs and tax revenue and provide clean energy.

Former employee at Omaha church admits to stealing $37K

CASH_MONEYOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man has been sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading guilty to felony theft of more than $37,000 from an Omaha church.

Douglas County District Judge Thomas Otepka ordered 42-year-old Jeffrey D. Bomberger, a former employee at Dundee Presbyterian Church, to pay $6,000 in restitution and receive treatment for a gambling addiction.

Douglas County Attorney’s Office investigator Lance Ivener says Bomberger, the former director of operations at the church, admitted to using the church’s funds to gamble at keno parlors.

In November 2015, church leaders discovered Bomberger was using a church account to purchase credit cards that he said were being used for charitable donations.

Bomberger’s attorney, Jim Hoppe, says most of the church’s losses were covered by insurance.
