North Platte – The North Platte Community College jumped out to a 19-1 lead on their way to a 87-74 victory over the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Wednesday night on ‘Special Olympics’ night.
Several of the North Platte area Special Olympians were in attendance at the game.
The Knights did not allow a field goal by the Mavericks for nearly the first half of the contest. When the Mavericks did make their first field goal, the Knights enjoyed a 21-7 lead.
The Knights led at halftime 42-25.
The Mavericks were able to crawl back into the game to bring it within four at 51-47 after a three-pointer by Eddie Reese.
The Knights continued their hot streak from the free throw line, making 21 of 23 shots from the line for the game.
The Knights, now 7-0 on the season were led in scoring by Diontae Champion, who finished with 20 points. Champion finished with six field goals, including a three-pointer and a perfect seven for seven from the free throw line. Champion also finished with eight rebounds to lead the Knights.
Also scoring in double figures for the Knights was Mike Amius, who went eight for eight from the field for 18 points, and Godfrey Rolle, who finished with 14 points.
The Mavericks, now 6-6 on the season and on a five game losing streak, were led in scoring by Eeese with 20 points, including three 3-pointers. Osa Wilson finished with 15 points to be the only other Maverick in double figures. Wilson also led the Mavericks with seven rebounds.
The Knights will tip-off Region IX South Division action when they host Northeastern Junior College on December 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm, following the women’s game.
