Safety regulator punishing companies for worker’s fall in Scottsbluff

OSHASCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Federal safety regulators have cited and proposed fines and penalties for two companies connected to a worker who fell at a Scottsbluff construction site.

The worker was injured in August after falling through a floor opening at the Western Sugar Cooperative plant expansion project.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Western Sugar and the worker’s employer, DSI Mechanical, should have covered the opening to prevent falls.

OSHA says DSI is contesting the proposed penalty of more than $8,100. The company’s lawyer didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press. OSHA says Western Sugar has negotiated its penalty down to $6,000 from nearly $9,100.

Omaha woman gets 2-3 years for stabbing death of mother

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 26-year-old Omaha woman has been given two to three years in prison for stabbing to death her mother.

Court records say Carletta Wells-Harris was sentenced Wednesday in Douglas County District Court. She’d pleaded no contest to manslaughter after prosecutors dropped a second-degree murder charge and a weapons count.

Authorities say Wells-Harris killed 43-year-old Meredith Wells during a dispute at her home on July 5 last year.

Man pleads not guilty in Lincoln slaying

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man has pleaded not guilty to what authorities say was a drug-related slaying in Lincoln.

Court records say 33-year-old Jamez Henderson entered his pleas Wednesday in Lancaster County District Court to a second-degree murder charge, use of a firearm, methamphetamine possession, and three other crimes.

Henderson and six other people are suspected in the Dec. 15 shooting death of 41-year-old Jamie Watson. His body was found in a car trunk.

Knights men’s basketball hosts Trinidad State and Otero in weekend hoops at McDonald-Belton

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team will host a pair of Region IX South Sub-Region opponents this weekend in crucial games.

On Friday, Feb 24, the Knights will host the Trinidad State Junior College Trojans. The Trojans are 15-10 on the season and 8-6 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Karamoko Cisse and Brandon Newman lead the Trojans in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Tykeem Anderson is third in scoring for the Trojans at 12.7 ppg and Malik Hart is averaging 10 ppg. Cisse is also leading the Trojans in rebounding at 6.5 rebounds per game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm CST.

On Saturday, Feb 25, the Otero Junior College Rattlers will visit McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. The Knights lost on a buzzer beater at La Junta, Colo, back on Jan 20. Tip-off is set for 3 pm CST.

The Rattlers are 18-7 overall and 8-6 in South Sub-Region play. Jervae Robinson leads the Rattlers in scoring with a 14.2 ppg average. Next is Michael Sparks at 13 ppg and Jordan Jones is the other Rattler in double figures at 12.3 ppg. Charles Gavin leads the Rattlers in rebounding at 6.6 ppg.

The Knights come into the weekend at 19-7 on the season and 6-7 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Diontae Champion leads the Knights in scoring at 16 ppg. Champion is one of five Knights averaging in double figures. The others are Samuel Kearns at 12.9 ppg, Godfrey Rolle at 12.7 ppg, Mike Amius at 11.5 ppg and Victor Lewis at 10.8 ppg. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at 5.8 rpq.

All three teams are battling to make the top four seeds in the South Sub-Region. The top four seeds will host a first round game of the Region IX tournament on March 4. Currently, Laramie County is seeded first with a 12-3 record, Lamar Community College and Western Nebraska Community College, each have a 10-5 record. Otero and Trinidad have two game left in the South Sub-Region. Each play the Knights and McCook Community College.

The Knights also have to play McCook on Tuesday Feb 28, besides these two games.

Both game will be broadcast on ESPN 1410 radio and on the Internet at www.northplattepost.com. They will also be livestreamed on www.npccknights.com.

UNL administrator accused of theft for plane travel

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An administrator at a University of Nebraska-Lincoln center has been accused of using university money to pay personal airplane travel expenses.

Online court records say 29-year-old Laviania Thandayithabani (tehn’-daye-uhth-uh-PAH’-naye) is charged with felony theft. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press. She’s assistant director of operations for the Nebraska Transportation Center, which aids collaboration by university, industry and government officials on transportation issues and research.

University police say in court documents that they found 17 charges on the university travel portal system from April 2015 through December 2016 totaling more than $11,300. Officials say none of the trips was approved.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 28.

Edward Joseph Royle

Edward Joseph Royle, 68, of Maxwell, passed away Feb. 19, 2017, with family by his side.

Edward was born on March 26, 1948, to Wilford and Hallie (Alexander) Royle in Loup City. He graduated in 1966 from Maxwell Public High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy.

He married Cheryl Rose on July 12, 1967.

Edward was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother and his two sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his two daughters, Shenle Clark and Jennifer Royle; 10 grandchildren, Natasha (Karl) Peeler, Desmund Clark, Alicia (David) Royle, Mykel Clark, Tiffanie (Brett) Royle, Crystal Clark, Devin Royle, Kayla (Eddie) Royle, Sierra Clark-Royle and Brittany Baulelit; 13 great-grandchildren; along with a large extended family and numerous friends.

Authorities release IDs of drivers in Grand Island collision

fatal-crashGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Grand Island authorities have released the names of a woman who was fatally injured and a man who was hurt in the collision of their cars.

The collision occurred around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Police Capt. Jim Duering identified the woman Thursday as Ivelynn Dwinell, of Grand Island, and the man as Larry Roebuck Jr., of Phillips.

Duering says Dwinell was pulling out of a restaurant driveway to head north when her car was struck by Roebuck’s southbound car.

Dwinell was pronounced dead later at a hospital. Roebuck was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision is being investigated.

NPCC Knights softball sweeps Northeastern

NPCC Knights LogoSterling, Colo – The North Platte Community College Knights softball team won a pair of games in a doubleheader against the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game, the Knights defeated the Plainswomen 8-7. Sophomore Samantha Foster picked up the win for the Knights.

In the final game of the day, the Knights completed the sweep with a 12-9 win. Erin Renwick got the win in game two.

“Our defense and offense are getting more consistent each game we play. Knights Head Coach Janelle Higgins said, “Our pitchers threw well and had help all the way around the field. We left less runners on base today which helped us secure two wins.”

The Knights had three home runs on the day. One each from Foster, Samantha Gill, and Alyiah Franco. Sarah Beaton added a triple.

The Knights are now 6-8 on the season and will be in action Saturday, Feb 25 when they travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to face the Iowa Western Community College Lady Reivers in a doubleheader. Game times are at noon and 2 pm.
On Sunday, Feb 26, they will travel to Norfolk, to play the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks.
