Nebraska leaders cheer passage of sex trafficking penalties

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Elected officials and community leaders are applauding the passage of a Nebraska bill that will result in longer prison sentences for people who buy and sell sex.

Leaders gathered Tuesday at the Capitol after senators voted 48-0 to pass the bill. The measure’s sponsor, Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks of Lincoln, says it will stop people who commit horrific crimes from just getting probation.

The bill will allow prison sentences of up to 50 years for trafficking an adult and life for trafficking a child. Attorney General Doug Peterson says these penalties demonstrate Nebraska will not tolerate slavery.

Women’s Fund of Omaha Policy Director Traci Bruckner says the next step to combat trafficking is supporting female victims and potential victims.

The measure now heads to Gov. Pete Ricketts for approval.

Driver gets probation in Nebraska Panhandle crash death

gavel-and-scaleCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — A 29-year-old man has been given 24 months of probation for the crash death of an Alliance woman.

Court records say Trevor Teichroeb, of Bayard, was sentenced Monday. He’d pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor vehicular homicide.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 68-year-old Barbara Fritzler was fatally injured Oct. 18 last year while waiting for a pilot car at a construction site on U.S. Highway 26, about a mile and a half east (3 kilometers) of Minatare. The patrol says Teichroeb’s pickup truck rammed into the rear of Fritzler’s car, knocking it into a vehicle ahead of hers.

Authorities ID Iowa pilot who died in Nebraska glider crash

plane-crashBLAIR, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say the fatal crash of a glider near Blair Airport occurred soon after the aircraft’s canopy opened unexpectedly as the glider was being towed aloft.

Nebraska authorities have identified the pilot as 59-year-old Michael Boska, who lived in Glenwood, Iowa. The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses say that after the canopy opened, Boska lost control of his glider. It went airborne but soon plunged and crashed while still attached to the tow plane.

Federal investigators have been called in.

Omaha Boys Town founder closer to sainthood

boys-townOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The founder of what has become Omaha’s Boys Town is now one step closer to obtaining sainthood.

The Vatican has issued a decree of validity for the investigation that the Archdiocese of Omaha completed two years ago. The investigation looks at the life, virtue and works of the Rev. Edward Flanagan, who died in 1948.

Steve Wolf, president of the Father Flanagan League Society of Devotion, said Monday that a decree of validity means the investigation is completed and proves the priest has a reputation for sanctity. The society is leading the sanctification effort.

Flanagan founded Boys Town in 1917 in downtown Omaha. City Archbishop George Lucas says Flanagan’s work has been a blessing for the community.

Regulator’s 2nd job not a conflict, attorney general says

ne-public-service-commissioLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An opinion from the Nebraska attorney general’s office says a state telecommunications regulator’s part-time job for a telecommunications consulting firm doesn’t violate state law.

The decision released Monday also says Nebraska Public Service Commission executive director Jeff Pursley’s position with Parrish, Blessing and Associates doesn’t violate his oath of office.

The commission had sought the opinion — which doesn’t carry the force of law — after questions were raised about his moonlighting. Pursley has said the five elected commissioners were aware of his part-time work when they hired him two years ago. He says he kept the part-time post because it offers health insurance coverage vital to his family.

The commission regulates oil pipelines, telecommunications, natural gas utilities, grain dealers, taxis and manufactured homes and recreational vehicles.

Tribes in US, Canada unite against Keystone XL oil pipeline

keystoneBISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Tribes representing tens of thousands of indigenous people on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border are signing a declaration against the planned Keystone XL pipeline.

Leaders of the Blackfoot Confederacy in Canada and the Great Sioux Nation and Ponca tribe in the U.S. plan a Wednesday ceremony in Calgary, Alberta, where pipeline developer TransCanada is based.

Ponca Councilwoman Casey Camp-Horinek says the document will highlight treaty rights and opposition to the proposed $8 billion pipeline to move Canadian crude through the U.S. central Plains. The event also could be a precursor to on-the-ground protests along the pipeline route.

Tribes fear environmental harm. TransCanada maintains the pipeline will be safe, create jobs and boost the economy. Spokeswoman Jacquelynn Benson says the company welcomes the views of indigenous communities.

Man charged with murder in fatal Omaha shooting

crime-scene-police-shootOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 21-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder, accused of fatally shooting another Omaha resident inside a parked car.

Court records say a preliminary hearing is scheduled June 14 for Benjamin Guevara. He’s accused of killing 21-year-old Oziel Vasquez-Serrano. The shooting was reported around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say he was pulled from the car and left to die.

A witness gave police the license plate number of the car as it sped away from the scene, and police say the plate number led investigators to Guevara.

He remained in custody Tuesday. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for him.

James Eugene Fattig

James Eugene Fattig, age 88 of North Platte, formerly of Wallace, passed away Friday May 12, 2017 at his home.  He had been in hospice care for 3 days.

Jim was born July 14, 1928 and was adopted when he was 6 weeks old by Glenn and Helen (Klump) Fattig of Ringgold, NE, in McPherson County.  He grew up in a loving home and grew to love the farm life.  He started helping with the field work at an early age.  He attended Cottonwood Grove Rural School through 8th grade and went to high school in Stapleton for 2 years.  Jim was married to Inez Lutes on May 20, 1951 at the home of her parents on the Lutes Ranch in the Sandhills in Logan County.  He farmed with his dad until 1958.  Three children were born at that location, Martin Louis, Janice Ionne, and Lynell Kay.  The family moved to Elsie, NE in 1958 where Jim was employed by a local farmer, Webb Flaming.  He later worked for the Elsie Equity as a feed mill operator.  Their 4th child, Glenda Jo was born while the family lived in Elsie.  They moved to a farm south of Wallace in 1965 where Jim worked for Marion and Jerome Clemens until 1968 when he and Inez purchased a service station in Wallace.  He did mechanic work, had a fuel delivery service and sold fertilizer until 1987.  They then were managers of a Motel 6 in Laramie, WY for 6 years.  They moved back to Wallace where he worked for local farmers, working the fields and driving a truck.  He worked as a truck driver for Opplinger Farms for 4 years.  After his retirement, he continued to help local farmers with field work and truck driving, especially at corn harvest time, and helping work fields in preparation for spring planting, until he was almost 87 years old.  He also served on the Elsie and Wallace Volunteer Fire Departments.  He loved to go to the local café to drink coffee with his friends and raising his garden; he was very sad when he could no longer garden after his 87th birthday.  Jim attended Cottonwood Grove Sunday School and Church with his parents and later the family attended Hall Church in rural McPherson County.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Elsie, and later in Wallace, where he was still a member at the time of his death.  Jim’s health started to fail in 2015, so he and Inez moved to South Oak Manor in North Platte on March 4, 2017 with the help of family and many friends.  He always liked a good story and we heard many of them over and over!  He loved to pester the ladies by putting trash in their purses, etc!  He enjoyed going to the senior center for meals and spending time with friends.

Jim will be greatly missed by Inez, his wife of nearly 66 years; his children Marty (Leslie) Fattig, Jan (Jim) Singleton, Lynell (Mark) Franklin, and Glenda (Martin) Vega; 8 grandchildren, Tony (Michelle) Singleton, Jason (Tonia) Franklin, Jeremy Franklin, Tara (Kris) Drain, Michelle (Ryan) Phifer, Tiffany (Travis) Phillips, Ryan Fattig, Lynsie (Rick Neely) Nichols; 5 step grandchildren, Ben (Nikki) Vega, Bob (Allison) Vega, Amanda (James) Wassinger, John (Victoria) Parrish, Andy (Charlotte Grooms) Parrish; 24 great grandchildren; sister, Doris Tiffany; brothers-in-law Loren (Janis Stout) Lutes and Lloyd Connell; sisters-in-law Joyce Lutes, Alice Lutes, Phoebe (Frank) Martin, Olive (Stan) Gurney, and Esther (Tom) Harmon; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Helen Fattig; mother-and-father-in-law Louis and Ernestine Lutes; brother-in-law Wayne Tiffany; brothers-and-sisters-in-law Flora Connell, Vernon (Pauline) Lutes, Ernie (June) Lutes, Susan (Alfred) Shimmin, Nathan Lutes, Stephen Lutes, Martin Lutes, Keith Lutes; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials are suggested to the Wallace Methodist Church or the Wallace Fire Department and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.  Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday May 15, 2017 at Wallace Methodist Church with Reverends Ann and Harun Gatobu and Tammy Aubushon officiating.  Burial will follow at the Morningview Cemetery.  Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. Sunday May 14, 2017 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
