Iowa sheriff’s deputy dies after jail escape

police-lights-redThe inmate who escaped from a western Iowa jail Monday managed to steal a sheriff’s deputy’s gun as he was returning from a court appearance and shot two deputies. One deputy died later.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says 23-year-old Wesley Williams Correa-Carmenaty attacked and shot the two deputies who were driving inmates back from court Monday.

Correa-Carmenaty then stole the jail transport van and drove it out through a garage door.

Danker says Correa-Carmenaty tried unsuccessfully to steal a pickup truck just outside the jail and shot the driver. Then he continued on in the van several blocks before crashing the van and carjacking a car.

Then he drove to Omaha where he was arrested after a short pursuit.

Before the escape, Correa-Carmenaty was sentenced Monday to 45 years in prison for his role in a botched robbery in March 2016. He had pleaded guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter, attempted murder and two counts of robbery in connection with the slaying of 22-year-old Anthony Walker.

Burbridge was a 12-year veteran of the sheriff’s department.

Nebraska village becomes ghost town after beer stores close

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska village blamed for fueling alcohol-related problems on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has become a virtual ghost town as mental health and substance abuse advocates arrive to help people.

The advocates found empty streets in Whiteclay, a sharp contrast from the usual scenes of drunkenness, loitering and violence in a town that sells millions of cans of beer each year near the home of the Oglala Lakota Tribe.

The push to offer services comes in the midst of a major shakeup in Whiteclay, a town with nine full-time residents. All four of its beer stores closed on Sunday after state regulators refused to renew their licenses, citing concerns about inadequate law enforcement. The stores are appealing the decision.

Twin sisters deliver baby boys on same day just hours apart

odd-newsBRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Twin sisters in New Jersey have delivered babies on the same day.

32-year-old fraternal twins Danielle Grant and Kim Abraham gave birth to baby boys on Friday. The sisters decided to have labor induced after their identical due dates of April 22 passed.

Grant and Abraham delivered their sons, Roman and Aaron, a little less than four hours apart.

The Toms River natives say their pregnancies were coincidences. Picking an induction date was the only thing that was consciously chosen.

Grant and Abraham say they’re very close and their husbands have become close as well so their sons will be like brothers.

The sisters plan to hold joint birthday parties for their sons and dress them in matching outfits.

Omaha teachers to get training in ‘cultural proficiency’

schoolOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The labor union representing public school teachers in Nebraska has created a new strategic plan to advance “a culture of social justice.”

Delegates from local teachers unions approved the plan last month during the Nebraska State Education Association’s annual assembly in Lincoln.

The plan calls for more diversity in teacher recruitment, training teachers in “cultural proficiency” and promoting a legislative agenda that “advances human and civil rights.”

Other goals included in the union’s plan are protecting collective bargaining rights and “being active in the election of pro-public education candidates.”

The union reports it has about 28,000 members.
