Pilot injured in Nebraska crash of crop-dusting plane

PIERCE, Neb. (AP) — A pilot has been flown to an Iowa hospital after the crash of his crop-dusting plane in northeast Nebraska.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were sent around 2 p.m. Tuesday to a field 7 miles (12 kilometers) west and 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of Pierce. The plane was spraying fields before the crash.

The unidentified pilot was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City for treatment. The Sheriff’s Office says the plane is owned by Bloomfield Ag & Aerial Service.

The crash cause is being investigated.

170 Lincoln jobs lost with closing of call center

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say 170 or so Lincoln jobs will be lost with the closing of another call center.

The layoffs are scheduled to continue into August at Dr. Leonard’s Healthcare Corp., which is based in Edison, New Jersey. The company president, Joseph Albanese, said Tuesday that the company is consolidating its call centers. It has one in Edison and one in Cleveland, plus another offshore. Dr. Leonard’s is a catalog and online retailer.

It’s the second major call center to close in Lincoln this year. Verizon Wireless shuttered its customer service center in March, eliminating 320 jobs.

Occupation tax approved for Omaha’s future Capitol District

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha City Council has approved a special occupation tax for the under-construction Capitol District.

Tuesday’s vote makes the mixed-use development the city’s first “enhanced employment district.” Such districts allow taxes to be collected from consumers in a certain area to fund public infrastructure and other development.

The district ordinance outlines a 0.5 percent tax on retail purchases and a 0.3 percent tax at some businesses south of the district.

Councilwoman Aimee Melton was the only dissenting vote, saying she supports the development but not the tax.

Developer Mike Moylan expects about $250,000 to be collected through the tax each year.

The tax will take effect in August, around the same time the district’s hotel will open.

Lincoln man must remain in psychiatric hospital, judge rules

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Continued commitment at the state psychiatric hospital has been ordered for a Lincoln man found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2006 slaying of a friend.

A judge ordered Tuesday that 29-year-old Shane Tilley again be allowed to walk — under staff supervision and while wearing a GPS monitor — around the grounds at the Lincoln Regional Center. Tilley fled the center on July 21, 2010, and was apprehended about eight hours later.

Tilley was found not guilty in the January 2006 stabbing death of a friend, Andy Lubben. Police found Tilley at his apartment, naked and uttering nonsensical words. He had knife wounds to his chest and neck, apparently self-inflicted.

Omaha man, woman plead no contest in child abuse case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man and woman accused of abusing their adopted child have pleaded no contest to five counts of negligent child abuse resulting in injury.

Stephen Bauer and Megan Finlan entered the pleas Wednesday. The pair had faced more serious charges of intentional child abuse resulting in serious injury.

The two were first arrested in 2015, when police were called to an Omaha elementary school for a report of a 7-year-old boy covered in scratches and bruises. Prosecutors say he was severely underweight and told police that Bauer and Finlan withheld food from him as punishment. He was also locked for days at a time in a room, with no access to a bathroom.

Bauer and Finlan each face up to 25 years in prison when they’re sentenced Sept. 15.

Judge puts recall effort against Bellevue official on hold

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — A recall effort against a Bellevue City Council member has been put on hold while a court considers whether the effort can continue.

Sarpy County District Judge William Zastera issued the hold Wednesday in the effort against Councilman Pat Shannon. A hearing on Shannon’s complaint that the recall affidavit is too vague to defend will be held July 27.

The recall effort was launched earlier this month days after Shannon was found not guilty of violating electrical license requirements for a building he owns. Last month, the City Council voted to give Shannon until the middle of this month to come up with plans to fix a car wash he owns that residents say is an eyesore.

Keystone XL opponent plans appeal to South Dakota high court

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — An attorney for a group fighting the Keystone XL pipeline says the organization plans to appeal a South Dakota judge’s decision upholding state regulators’ approval for the pipeline to cross the state.

Dakota Rural Action attorney Robin Martinez said Wednesday that the conservation and family agriculture group plans to raise the issue to the South Dakota Supreme Court. Others could also appeal.

Judge John Brown last month affirmed a Public Utilities Commission decision that was challenged by Native American tribes, landowners and others. Martinez says the high court will have an opportunity to look at issues that affect the pipeline and how the commission operates.

The project would move crude oil from Canada across Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines feeding refineries along the Gulf Coast.

BRUNSWICK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a South Dakota teenager has been killed in a car accident in northeast Nebraska.

The Antelope County Sheriff’s Office says the car was northbound on Nebraska Highway 14 when it ran off the roadway into the west ditch and rolled before hitting a tree. The 16-year-old driver was ejected.

The Sheriff’s Office says the boy died later at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. His name and hometown haven’t been released.

Ex-teacher gets jail time, probation in sex-with-teen case

Emily Lofing

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska City teacher accused of debauching a minor has been given jail time and probation.

Court records say 27-year-old Emily Lofing was sentenced Monday in Nebraska City to 90 days in jail and two years of probation. She also must serve 240 hours of community service.

Lofing had pleaded no contest to an amended charge of contributing to the delinquency of a child. The original charge was debauching a minor.

Lofing was accused of arranging a meeting last summer to have sex with a 16-year-old boy. Otoe County Attorney David Partsch has said the boy was old enough to legally consent to sex, so debauchery was the most serious charge that could have been filed in the case.

She has resigned her position at Nebraska City Middle School.
