‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ roars past ‘Spider-Man’

NEW YORK (AP) — “War for the Planet of the Apes” took down “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at the North American box office, opening with an estimated $56.5 million in ticket sales.

Though some initially expected a closer race, “Spider-Man” dropped to second with $45.2 million after its No. 1 debut last weekend. Boosted by strong reviews, Fox’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” easily came out on top.

That still put the third “Planet of the Apes” film in the rebooted franchise well behind the previous 2014 installment, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” That sequel launched with $72.6 million.

After three weeks of limited release, Kumail Nanjiani’s acclaimed romantic comedy “The Big Sick” expanded nationwide over the weekend. It pulled in $7.7 million in about 2,600 theaters.

2 Lincoln teens win $10,000 for duct tape prom outfits

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Lincoln teens won $10,000 scholarships with their prom outfits made out of duct tape.

Emily O’Gara and Ethan Weber won an online vote to claim the grand prize in the Duck tape company’s Stuck at Prom contest.

The Lincoln couple was among 34 finalists in the contest.

They used more than 14 rolls of duct tape to create the prom dress and tux they wore to Pius X High School’s prom this spring. It took them four weeks to complete the outfits.

O’Gara says the experience was exhausting but fun. She plans to use her scholarship to pursue a degree at the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota.

Omaha dog to compete in international obstacle course

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 5-year-old miniature American shepherd from Omaha has a shot at global glory in Italy as she trains to be the quickest dog in the nation and perhaps the world.

Pixel and her owner and trainer Ami Sheffield will be traveling to Italy at the end of the month to join the American Kennel Club team in competing at the European Open.

Dog agility competitions measure how fast a dog can complete an obstacle course. Trainers are given a course map with a few minutes to prepare, and dogs must complete the course in the correct order without error, otherwise they’ll face a time penalty or elimination.

Pixel is competing in the 12-inch jump class and is Team USA’s only representative from Nebraska.

Robert Leo Starr

Robert Leo Starr died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Loveland, Colorado on July 12, 2017 at the age of 84, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer and other health issues.
Where to begin? Bob Starr was a great many things to a great many people. He was best friend and husband to his wife Gail for 58 years. He was a remarkable father to three children and a grandfather to six. He was kind to a fault. He lived to please others. He was a great man. Other than his family, his former students and athletes were Bob’s greatest pride. He touched hundreds of young lives in Nebraska during his 33 years as a beloved teacher, coach, and mentor in Sargent, St. Paul, Kearney, Beatrice, North Platte, Lincoln High, and Seward. Bob was a proud graduate of Havelock Junior High and Lincoln Northeast (Always a Rocket!). Bob played football at Doane College, then served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1954. He continued his education at Nebraska Wesleyan University where he played football and graduated in 1958. He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He earned his master’s degree at Kearney State College in 1965. He was a member of the Nebraska Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame. He was former President of the Nebraska Coaches’ Association and was active in the annual Shrine Bowl of Nebraska football game. He served as coach for the Shrine Bowl in both 1968 and 1976 and was the first coach for the Western Nebraska All-Star football game. Bob’s love for dogs was known by all. He was the happiest when there was a dog nearby. Schnauzers, boxers, and mutts of all kinds knew they were going to get a lot of love and good scratches if Bob was close.
Bob leaves his wife Gail, daughter Kim and husband Monte of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Jennifer and husband Darin of Westminster, Colorado; son Bart and wife Monica of Denver, Colorado; six grandchildren, Connor, Emma, Allyson, Ethan, Iris, and Graham; sister-in-law, Pat Starr; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; goddaughters Karen Rohde and Jacki Hinrichs; and more friends and loved ones than one can count.
